There are many organizations that specialize in digging wells already, and if the The Elovaters Alien Shark Attack Tee White 2023 shirt but in fact I love this population of the USA all donated $47 to those companies, theoretically there could be wells dug for every person that needs one in Africa. Kinda a bad comparison since children and homeless exist, but expand that population to every decently well off person in the “western” world and there could be a LOT of good done with minimal donation if everyone did it, especially if the rich chip in semi-proportionally to everyone else. So idk, there’s definitely enough money overall in the west to make a significant difference in Africa. Much more CAN be done, and the reason why it’s not done is greed. The question is if we manage to get a huge sum of money out of the general population, governments and the ultra rich somehow, what is the best way to spend it to be sustainable, and I don’t think there’s an easy answer for that. I’m not trying to say that we can’t do more, but it’s a little more complicated than chucking money at the issue imo, more money always helps at least a bit though.

The big question here is why are you depending on others to fund the wells when you can take out a loan and do it yourself? Only 8k a small loan for anyone from a first world country. External help doesn’t help much. The well will need maintenance at some point and then it’s back to square one. NGOs have done this for a long time, it doesn’t improve the situation if there are underlying issues with society, nature, education etc. in the country the well is built. An example of problems, though, is Mexico, and I have seen these first hand. Many poor in Mexico live in wood shacks. They may have running water but seldom sewer. The “city water” if they have it, is not treated and therefore unsafe to drink.
