Most voters care about things like stances on political issues. Spanish speakers, for instance, are way more likely to vote for someone based on their stance on abortion than whether they describe it as their postura de aborto. Because they don’t need to. Just like how British and Australian Prime Ministers don’t know many. I don’t think citizens in other countries with a dominant language care much more for other languages since they don’t need speeches in them. Most presidents have been monolingual at least in the That’s What I Do I Smoke Meat And Know Things T-Shirt but in fact I love this 20th century. That’s because most Americans are monolingual. Many American universities require only a year of foreign languages at most. You really don’t become fluent by studying a language for a year. Those of us who grew up abroad have a leg up in that regard but most American presidents haven’t grown up abroad. Only four recent presidents seem to speak more than one language. Bush has some proficiency in Spanish. Obama seems to have claimed to have a proficiency in Indonesian and then claimed he couldn’t speak a foreign language. Carter and Clinton both seem to have some ability to speak Spanish and German respectively. Yesterday, my son decided that he wants to learn a foreign language he chose French. He made me download the app and ask what I want to speak and I want to brush up on some Spanish, so we are teaching each other what we learn even if we don’t speak fluently maybe we know a couple of phrases that would help us out to connect with someone on another language level!!! There probably have been US presidents who couldn’t name all of the states without the names on them. tRumph could barely write a sentence, Because it’s not important to most people. I could care less what languages a presidential candidate speakers besides English
