I didn’t feel confident I knew what I was doing until I was around 35. Sometimes I still feel like I’m winging it when it comes to the Texas Rangers Mickey Mouse Donald Duck Goofy Baseball Shirt it is in the first place but kids. And hand in hand, the people who think they know exactly what their doing, are the people least prepared to handle when they inevitably don’t. Let me give you an example. At 28, you do know how to do a lot of things you didn’t know at 14. And when you’re 56 you’ll know more. But you’ll also know that you don’t know so much more than you can ever know. And that every day, there is some thing you have responsibility for that you haven’t done before, or that you aren’t sure what the right thing to do is. Let me give you a sad example. My mom is old – in her late 70’s. About a year ago, her healthy older sister fell a small distance, hit her head, hemorrhaged in her brain, and was brain-dead in minutes. The hospital told me, and I had to tell my mom that it was time to take her sister off life-support. It fell to me to tell my mother that her sister was gone, and soon her body would be dead. How do you do that? Where do they teach you how to do that? I had no idea how to do it, but I had to do it.

Now let me give you a not-sad example, work related. A few years ago, I was abruptly sent on a business trip to the Texas Rangers Mickey Mouse Donald Duck Goofy Baseball Shirt it is in the first place but CES show Las Vegas (like less than 24 hours notice). I was told by my boss that I would meet the new person we just hired – they told me he was expert in a new line of business we were starting, and the expert would show me around the show floor and introduce me to potential customers. My job was, “Learn as much as you can from the new guy about the new line of business as fast as possible.” So I get there and we meet at the agreed-upon location at some shiny hotel restaurant on the strip, and after the “Hellos” and “do you want to order any food?” he says to me, “They tell me you know everything about this new line of business, and I’m looking forward to learning from you.” I told him, “Interesting. I expected the same of you.” We both paused, laughed and realized that neither of us had any fucking idea what to do. We didn’t have any contacts, we barely understood the industry, but we were both pretty successful in our careers, so we agreed to figure out what to do on the fly. So, yes, we had no specific idea what we were doing, but generally, our prior experience gave us the way to handle the situation. It all worked out; we got a client from the show, and that client turned quickly into a 7-figure project, and the whole line of business grew to 8 figures in year one, led by two guys who “had no idea what they were doing” – but really did.
