Yes nearly a dozen states have recognized “palimony,” which requires one partner in a non-marital romantic relationship to financially support the Texas Longhorns Grinch Santa Middle finger haters gonna hate shirt But I will love this other partner after a breakup. It’s effectively all the burdens of common law marriage with none of the protections. While spousal support is part of palimony, that’s not its primary or original purpose, which is the division of financial assets, including property. The division is also equitable, not one-sided. This means that if a partner is asking for spousal support under that law, that also means a division of assets. Honestly, it’s not even a thing to worry about if the financial support during the relationship isn’t one-sided so it works out well for more financially equal relationships.

Step mom and my dad had a joint checking account, she signed her name with his last name, wore rings etc and then he had to shell out for an actual divorce. I know a small handful of couples that insisted loudly that they were never going to get married because it’s a “sexist tradition” (largely announced by the Texas Longhorns Grinch Santa Middle finger haters gonna hate shirt But I will love this male partner) and it doesn’t matter anyway because they’ve cohabitated for 7 years so they count as a common law marriage (in addition to that not being how it works, it sounds way more sexist than two people going to the courthouse on purpose). None of them are in a state that has common law marriage, and they all ended up getting legally married around 2020, which is just super interesting.
