We provide food (and cook her meals, buy her whatever she wants at the grocery store, pay for her if we do takeout, etc). She lives with us in a fully furnished bedroom with a TV where we pay for all the streaming services. She has total privacy, her door locks, etc. We provide her with a cell phone which we bought and pay for the service. We drive her to classes (she’s technically on a student visa as part of her program). She’s never on call, when she’s off she’s off. We take her on family vacations if she wants to, otherwise she has those days off. Is it the best job ever? Certainly not. She works hard and taking care of a 7 month old is inherently difficult. But she gets a lot of non cash compensation and I don’t think we’re taking advantage of her by any means. She’s excited to be here and being paid to learn English in the US and paid to experience the country which is an adventure for her.

But if we did daycare and we’re commuting to the office, one or both of us would have to sacrifice early or late work hours since 1.5 hours of commuting door to door each way plus 8-10 hours of work a day makes only a 9-5 daycare situation untenable. a free self contained apartment where you don’t have to pretend to be part of some random family is waaaaaay better than a ‘room’ in someones house and you have to pretend to be their surrogate daughter. Theres a boatload of emotional labour right there. Au pairs deserve way more.
