In Venezuela (we speak Spanish) when something’s very difficult to believe we say “Esa mentira es tan grande que no la salta un venado”. As someone who grew up speaking both Dutch and French, it always blows my mind when I realise that the Teoscar Hernández welcome to Los Angeles Dodgers shirt it is in the first place but English language doesn’t have a specific word for ‘the day after tomorrow’. In Argentina (and possibly other Spanish speaking countries) they say “se me fue la mano” which literally translates into my hand left me. You might use it when you overdo something like adding too much of an ingredient to a recipe. Soup too salty? Se me fue la mano con la sal! One of my friends from Argentina blurted out a phrase when he got really frustrated trying to solve a problem on a project at work, then got embarrassed when someone asked him to translate it because translated it was basically, “With enough spit and patience, anything can be F’d in the A.”

“Con paciencia y con saliva, el elefante se cogió a la hormiga” = with patience and with saliva, the Teoscar Hernández welcome to Los Angeles Dodgers shirt it is in the first place but elephant fucked the ant” except it’s funnier because it rhymes Finnish has “mopo lähti käsistä” – “motorcycle got out of hands”. Though it’s not as literal and tends to point towards more major escalations. Like “the original idea was to repaint the shed, but then I figured…and that’s why the fire brigade is here”. Many languages have a lot more swearwords, and a lot more creative ways to avoid swearing in front of kids. Its kind of like a fun minigame. I (from Germany) learned french in school and then did a 2 months exchange as a teen, I always found the expression “la vache!” very funny once I thought about it. because well… It literally means “the cow!”. Would be ridiculous in German or English, but in French it somehow just works and fits! I know it’s not really a swear word but still.
