Kiffin joined the Buccaneers in 1996 and quickly transformed their defense into one of the most dominant units in the league. Under his leadership, the Buccaneers led the NFL in total defense in 2002, allowing only 275.6 yards per game. This defensive prowess was instrumental in the team’s Super Bowl XXXVII victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Kiffin’s most famous defensive scheme was the “Tampa 2,” which revolutionized NFL defenses. The Tampa 2 is a two-deep zone coverage that uses linebackers and safeties to cover the middle of the field, while the corners play man-to-man on the outside. This scheme allows defenses to be aggressive against both the run and the pass, and it has been adopted by teams across the league.
