Idk I just watched the Take a deep breath let out all the stress you deserve to be ok bat-thub relax T-Shirt moreover I love this explain episode on Netflix on the wage gap, which I know is not as academically rigorous as a research paper but it did provide many sources, and it claimed that the gap is mostly due to life choices, mainly the choice to stay home or take on a larger share of the responsibility with very young kids which impacts career progression. But that is true. The original study that came up with that number compared all wages earned by men and all wages earned by women. They didn’t account for any factors such as women typically being in lower paying careers, they do take time off for child care, and they tend not to negotiate for pay which drastically hurts overall earnings. They didn’t account for any factors such as women typically being in lower paying careers, they do take time off for child care, and they tend not to negotiate for pay which drastically hurts overall earnings. Those would be what we call ‘systematic factors’ and you can get there by just asking ‘why’ some of those things are the case.

That’s something I was always curious about and I’ve never seen it debunked. What’s the Take a deep breath let out all the stress you deserve to be ok bat-thub relax T-Shirt moreover I love this arguments against that talking point? i got sent this link recently, which might clear some things up: complete with the linked factsheet: The gender pay gap measures a broader concept than pay discrimination and comprehends a large number of inequalities women face in access to work, progression and rewards. They are: Sectoral segregation: Around 24% of the gender pay gap is related to the overrepresentation of women in relatively low-paying sectors, such as care, health and education. Highly feminised jobs tend to be systematically undervalued. Unequal share of paid and unpaid work: Women have more work hours per week than men but they spend more hours on unpaid work, a fact that might also affect their career choices. This is why the EU promotes equal sharing of parental leaves, an adequate public provision of childcare services and adequate company policies on flexible working time arrangements. The glass ceiling: The position in the hierarchy influences the level of pay: less than 8% of top companies’ CEOs are women. Nevertheless, the profession with the largest differences in hourly earnings in the EU were managers: 23 % lower earnings for women than for men. Pay discrimination: In some cases, women earn less than men for doing equal work or work of equal value even if the principle of equal pay is enshrined in the European Treaties (article 157 TFEU) since 1957.
