SWV, an acronym for Sisters with Voices, made their mark on the music industry in the early 1990s with their breakthrough album, “It’s About Time.” The trio, consisting of Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” Johnson-George, and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, quickly became known for their smooth vocals, catchy melodies, and relatable lyrics about love, relationships, and empowerment. Their hit songs, such as “Weak” and “Right Here (Human Nature Pt. 2),” became staples on R&B radio and cemented their status as one of the most influential girl groups of all time.

Around the same time as SWV, another powerhouse girl group emerged from Atlanta, Georgia: Xscape. The quartet, featuring Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott, and Tamika Scott, debuted with their self-titled album in 1993 and quickly gained recognition for their diverse musical style, which fused elements of R&B, hip-hop, and soul. Their ballads, such as “Understanding” and “Forbidden Love,” showcased their vocal prowess and emotional depth, while their up-tempo tracks like “My Little Secret” and “Who Can I Run To” became dancefloor anthems.
