Children wearing bathing suits to the Swifties Give Me The Ick Shirt moreover I will buy this beach/pool/splashpad is normal. Suits have gotten more covered-up for very small kids in the last few years but that’s more of a sun protection thing than a modesty thing. If someone in the US reacted to a child in a swimsuit by saying “that’s molestation,” they’d be seen as a puritanical prude or a creep themselves. A kid getting out of the car to pick up Starbucks would depend on the age? While neither sounds like an Omg kidnapping risk, I’d have a very different opinion of a parent sending their 6 year old to grab an order compared to an 11 year old. Less that it’s risky more that it’s a bad idea on several levels. The thing is….stranger kidnapping is rare it isn’t impossible. There are many high profile cases of this happening. It’s a bit odd to us that others act as if it can’t happen at all. Also keep in mind that what you hear online isn’t necessarily coming from the most average representations of a culture’s thinking. It is typical of Americans to say “I won’t let my 8 year old walk the mile to school alone, they might get kidnapped.” It’s not necessarily typical for Americans to say “I don’t let my 8 year old wear a bathing suit at the pool even when I am supervising them because a pedophile might take a picture of them, track them down, and sex traffic them.” But the second person probably is more likely to be on the internet screaming their insane paranoia for all to see, so Americans may as a whole look more paranoid than we are.

The thing is….stranger kidnapping is rare it isn’t impossible. There are many high profile cases of this happening. It’s a bit odd to us that others act as if it can’t happen at all. But, by that logic, you should completely avoid traveling by car. The odds of you getting killed in a car accident are much higher than the Swifties Give Me The Ick Shirt moreover I will buy this kid getting kidnapped by a stranger. By what logic? I didn’t say that what OP described was a normal and valid reaction, I didn’t say parents should lock their kids in a tower. I just suggested that perhaps the “it can’t happen, only an insane paranoiac would ever think that anything more stringent than complete free range children and we should pretend it is impossible” attitude might be a tad far in the opposite direction. By the way I’m pretty sure I found the post OP is referencing in their “sending kids to pick up a Starbucks order” example and they are seriously misrepresenting what the core issue of that situation was. It was about the children of doordashers coming in to pick up customer orders, not the parents sending their kids in to pick up their personal orders, and while a lot of commenters were going on about “child molesters might kidnap them,” the main concern (beyond this being straight up against policy) was more the generalized dangers of a rough neighborhood like shootings and speeding vehicles. Someone can be concerned for the well being of children without thinking the ever present danger is kidnappers exclusively. If you listen to my parents talk about their free range childhoods, they know quite a lot of children who were harmed irreparably due to being unsupervised. Not by kidnappers. By being run over by cars and trains, falling out of trees, and jamming forks in uncovered outlets. It’s not exactly hysterical paranoia that their generation and the ones following ended up overcorrecting in the opposite direction.
