Secondly, there’s a sort of “All of Congress is bad except my guy” bias. Approval ratings for Congress as a whole are usually in the Support Awareness Squad Your Fight I Eye Cancer Ocular Melanoma T-Shirt and by the same token and gutter, but approval ratings among individual Congressmen in their respective districts are much higher; they have to be, they get re-elected, that’s how elections work. When Johnny McFuckface in Montana gets $50M for a bridge in Bumfuck, Nowhere then it’s a clear waste of federal funding for everyone except the guys in the great town of Bumfuck… and only Bumfuck residents matter for re-election. Thirdly, there is also a prominent “I’ve heard of that name before” bias (like, say, being a host of a TV show and having your one serious skill be promoting your own brand which is your own last name). Most people are pretty low-information when it comes to politics, and this is more pronounced the further away you get from the Presidency (and even then the amount of people who have no idea what even their preferred candidate feels about anything is ludicrous). The incumbency bias is pretty strong in part because the incumbent is a name that voters have heard of; when I voted in the last election, I couldn’t tell you who was on the school board in my town.

They don’t care if Biden, for example, does his job well or is popular. They just know that he is their friend and will protect their interests. When they find politicians like that, they hold onto them forever. And thanks to the “blue no matter who” voters and their counterparts on the right, the people in power know that literally any candidate they give us will get the votes as long as they have the right letter and color next to their name. So they pick the ones whom they control. There is a lot of cynicism in here, but the honest to god reason is that Gen X just didn’t produce good politicians that can run for office.
