I called for the Suns 2021 Western Conference Champions Finals T-Shirt and by the same token and national strike to be held on October 3, 2016. I had some experience with protests and was an activist before PiS came to power. But the inspiration came from my partner, Natalia, who had just read about the Icelandic women’s strike in 1975. We were saying that if we wanted to do something about this abortion ban, we couldn’t do it on a Saturday or a Sunday, it couldn’t be happy march with balloons. I also met with Solidarity legend Henryka Krzywonos, who helped lead Poland’s 1980 shipyard strike and moved the strike out of the city and all over Poland. In Polish, strike doesn’t only mean the typical wage-fight thing. It means resistance. That’s how communism was brought down—with the strikes. So in our language, it’s the fight symbol.

On Sunday, the Suns 2021 Western Conference Champions Finals T-Shirt and by the same token and 25th of September, I called for the National Strike. Very soon, my friend started an event on Facebook, and we formed an organizer’s group. What we did was kind of trick people into organizing protests. I put this poll on Facebook and asked people, “Do you want to protest? In which city? Name the cities.” And people started meeting other people who were interested in protesting in their cities, even in small towns. In the end, 150 cities in Poland protested. Of course, it was in the big cities, it was in the capital city. But the most important protests took place in the small and middle-size cities. That scared the government. They thought that there would be places in Poland where there would be no resistance. But it turned out that the government doesn’t know if there’s a city that won’t protest. I think that’s what really scared them. The initial ban was dropped after that.
