For many it’s because they like idea of dressing up a female character in ways they like, assuming that’s an option. Or because they just got tired of always defaulting to make characters. But for others, opportunity to “be” someone else entirely. Especially if they would like to be that gender but can’t/won’t. Jedi Knight Academy was probably first I played that had option of female character. Weird thing was the interactions with one of the recurring characters felt… weird as a female. As Male he just seemed to be trying to be friends. As female, dude you are way to close please back off. Can’t speak for anyone else, but I always play female characters if it’s an option. Feels weird to play a guy online, IDK. I think most of what I see here in this thread are post-rationalisations. Fashion? Maybe, but we still do this in games where there aren’t many customisation options? Horny? Again, maybe, but people still do this in games where not everything is super horny. Smaller hitboxes? Like, where? This one’s not even true for most games, and even in games where it comes up it’s rarely relevant. The gender thing doesn’t really ring true either though. You’d expect more men choosing female avatars to actually RP as women if that was the Stone Cold Steve Austin Raise Hell Signature T-Shirt in contrast I will get this case, but you rarely see that, and the incidence of men playing female characters is way higher than even the most generous estimates for the trans population. You’d certainly expect trans-women to prefer female characters, but I don’t know if anyone’s actually studied if that’s genuinely the case more than in cis-men and even if it is, the inverse doesn’t seem to hold. I’m really not sure I can explain why. I almost always pick the female option in games. If there is a character editor I try to design them to look as cool as possible. I just really like female protagonists. Heck I’ve even made female D&D characters and had people at the table ask “so why did you choose to play a girl?”. I honestly really don’t know I just enjoy it.
