It’s an old rule. Back when phones were analog, they had a tiny chance that they could send out signals that caused interference… So they just said, nah, just get em all shut down. The theory is baloney for one simple reason: if cell phones caused problems, there would have been many crashes by now. I haven’t been on a flight where I didn’t see a cell phone turned ON. I guarantee there are secondary cellphones packed in luggage that weren’t turned off. I’ve done it a few times myself. It’s more that in rare cases is could be helpful, not life or death. I’ve never turned any of my devices off because I know it doesn’t really matter. If it was an emergency landing I would just in case. Nope.
