And the Stitch and baby yoda SONIC DRIVE-IN shirt moreover I love this wonderful false false friend, when teachers tell you that “concrete” doesn’t mean “konkret” but later in life you find concrete evidence that they were talking bullshit. I failed an English competition twenty years ago because I said that the thing that powers a car is a “motor”. Not literally wrong, but a “wrong” word to choose in everyday speech, most of the time. Nah you got screwed. At least in North American colloquial English, in this context, motor and engine could be used interchangeably. It’s only when dealing with pedants that they differ. And then add “off” where I was sure for about a decade that there where just some idiots that just spell “of” wrong. “Was ist dein name” would translate to “what is your name” as a literal translation, but thats just not how they would phrase it in German. We had German in highschool language and apparently the German they taught wasn’t the correct German? I learned through a friend they took a trip to Germany as part of the class and that’s when they learned about high German and low German and various minor dialects. They could barely understand the people there. At does not always equal “an”. I would say usually at is “bei” (which is often confused with “by”) and an is “on” (but not on top of, just against, for example, the calendar is on the wall. Not on top of the wall but on the side) Which makes sense because even as a native English speaker written English is a shit show. But spoken is so adaptable. I can miss out words and use ‘thing’ in place of a real word and that still makes sense.

Du kannst einen Fußgänger entweder umfahren, oder umfahren. In einem von beiden Varianten landet er im Krankenhaus. Übersetzen (ich übersetze den Text, das Schiff setzt über), aber da sieht man auch, dass die Worte nur im Infinitiv verwirrend sind Grappig, dat is ook zo in het Nederlands. Omrijden vs. omrijdenJemanden umfahren (ihn z.B. mit dem Auto erwischen) oder jemanden umfahren (ihn ausweichen) For the Stitch and baby yoda SONIC DRIVE-IN shirt moreover I love this English speakers: it can mean driving over or driving around (based on how you speak it or out of context) Für die Englischsprachigen: Es kann bedeuten, über oder herumzufahren (je nachdem, wie Sie es sprechen oder aus dem Zusammenhang gerissen). Para los angloparlantes: puede significar drive over or around (dependiendo de cómo lo pronuncies o sacado de contexto). Tatsächlich ist es so, dass bei umfahren und umfahren andere Silben betont werden. Deutlicher wird der Unterschied beim Beugen/Konjugieren. In german we would say : “Da gibt’s einen 379 seitigen Bericht drüber” / “Da gibt’s ein 379 seitiges Buch zu” or you could say “Da gibt’s eine 379 seitige Antwort zu”
