Like any sort of show like this, there is always pre planning and having what they need “hidden”. Like you said it worked and made for a great show I’ve worked as an Engineer for quite some time and my barometer of a top level person is if they could go on scrapheap challenge. How convenient – that’s just what we need for our machine! I think some things were deliberately planted for the teams to find otherwise some tasks would have been impossible. Especially the aeroplane one. That time they showed the plant, as three brand new propellers would have been a stretch. Definitely, they had to do that to make the format work. Otherwise we’d just watch the teams spend all their time trying to figure out how to get some knackered engine to run, and never actually build anything. You know they’re doing it, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s an acceptable trade-off in order to make great TV. There are still quite a few episodes on YouTube! I don’t live in the Uk anymore, but love watching them to remember the good times!

Two teams of non descript, balding, slightly round bellied white men with utterly mythical skills of mechanics and engineering compete to create incredible machines from junk. Trebuchets, fan boats, car-submarines, wrecking ball tanks, whatever, they could do it. To create incredible machines from a pile of junk with a few carefully added working engines/cars/motorcycles artfully distressed to make them look like junk. Great show. Used to have a bunch of old episodes on VHS as a kid and I must have watched them hundreds of times. Sure it was obviously a little staged, but it was still informative and I loved seeing what they’d build next. Which episode was it that had that team that drank an ungodly amount of tea? Like every shot of them they had a cup of tea in hand and by the Steel Ball Run The World’s First Cross Country Horse Race In The United States Shirt in other words I will buy this end of build they had drunk the entire stock of tea on site.
