Because asking everyone to learn random words in other languages before you even know the Steamboat Coily Rifftrax Shirt Furthermore, I will do this name of the country is from isnt’ reasonable. The priority of most people is to communicate effectively, that’s far easier when using words in your own language to describe other countries. Only the US considers it rude to not automatically know ( and be able to pronounce) names of other countries in the native tongue. Nipon became Japan through international telephone. First Europeans they met were (I think) Italians or Spaniards, who tried to tell the rest of Europe about Nipon, only they pronounced the Japanese word with their accent, and every European country tried to say their new version of Nipon in their own accent, eventually solidifying into Japan That’s an opinion but then we could continue calling places like Belarus white Russia as in the past, since it’s fully translated from Russian.

Does pronunciation count too? Because a lot of people will have issues with sounds that don’t exist in their own language. I’d rather live with the Steamboat Coily Rifftrax Shirt Furthermore, I will do this English name for my country than have people constantly butcher it, because you know that will be an issue. Most countries are called by the name they once had or the name they were given by someone else. Germany for example is from the latin word for those tribes. Persia from the latin word for that area. Both of those are exonyms. But for a place like Japan, we legitimately call them and their currency (In English Yen, in Japanese En) by the way they used to be pronounced, or some approximate of that. Turkey is the English version of the country of Turkey’s name. We actually named the bird in the Americas after a similar looking Turkish Hen iirc. They ask us to call them Türkiye, and sure that’s doable, but pretty pedantic considering how close we are to their name. But even if we switch the spelling will probably anglicize to Turkya in common writing.
