I refuse to believe it’s that egregious. It needs correcting but in no way shape or form am I believing anyone is paying 60k for only 2k going towards the Star Wars The Mandalorian Grogu IG 12 baby yoda shirt but in fact I love this principle Similar story here. Graduated in 2010. Undergrad + law school for about $85k combined, all federal at 6.7%. Unfortunately that was the tail end of the global financial crisis and entry level legal job apocalypse. My first six months, I deferred while I job hunted and took the bar. Then, realizing my job options were a lot worse than I expected them to be when I started law school in 2007, I started clerking for $9.50/hr at a local district court while I still looked for something better. I went on income based repayment during that time, which means your payments are manageable, but the interest and what you don’t pay is is all recapitalized. So if you owed $1,000/month under the loan plan, but IBR said you only had to pay $200/month, your principle goes up $800/month. I don’t think folks who haven’t been on IBR widely understand that it works that way. In 2011, about a year post graduation, I found a decent job. I had to move cross country, but it was $60k/year salary with benefits. That still left me relying on IBR, though, and my principle had crept up to nearly $100k. Three years at that job, making every single payment on time exactly as IBR specified, my debt was approaching $150k.

By 2014 and with another cross country move, I landed a higher-paying job in a lower cost of living market. A promotion and relocation a year later took me off IBR. So I compared that to the total costs of just throwing that same amount of money at the federal loans. The difference? Give up all the federal protections to save like $5k over the remaining life of the loan. I didn’t think that was worth it.
