My brother works in pharma, and for a year or so in a lab he was working with prion diseases. 10 years later and he still talks about how he’s mildly worried about those days. He learned enough about prion diseases to definitely be pretty terrified of them. “Were you aware that the Star Wars Santa Hat Yoda the Mandalorian Merry Christmas shirt but in fact I love this only documented cases of Kuru were members of a cannibalistic tribe in eastern Papua New Guinea?” Reddit has been introducing to too many new fears lately, it’s been tough. At least I know now not to eat brains, or apparently any beef in Europe I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: prions are absolutely terrifying. There should be more horror movies about them. Every time this topic pops up on Reddit, I avoid clicking on it or reading anything about it. I really hate the idea that this stuff exists. It shouldn’t exist and to the majority of people on the planet it doesn’t. I bet if you put 100 people in a room, and asked all of them, only 1-2 of them would’ve ever even heard of it. Some things are better to not know At 100% mortality, would it not also have the highest mortality rate of any disease ever? Regardless if it is inherited or not? Is there a disease out there that’s inherited with a mortality rate over 100%? They also survive most types of surgical instrument sterilization, and is usually only identifiable from post-mortem brain biopsy. Fun fact. Cows got/spread mad cow disease by eating other cows. Beef cows are fed a protein supplement to prepare them for market faster. This supplement is made from byproducts (ie guts, offal) from slaughter houses. It is cooked, dehydrated and formed into pellets but even those processes don’t destroy prions.

Literally no idea what any of that means. I just thought it was funny that they added context of non inherited, and then the Star Wars Santa Hat Yoda the Mandalorian Merry Christmas shirt but in fact I love this amount was 100% Is this something new or something we can only diagnose since very recently. Never even heard of prions and now this is like the 10th time this year. Correct me if I’m wrong. I feel like prion disease is as close to an infectious cancer it gets. I mean, it’s an “error” that sets of a chain reaction in an organism. Cancer is just cells that can’t stop dividing. That’s the extent of the problem. It’s complicated because there are many different factors that cause any specific instance of cancer, and that’s why there’s trouble creating cures. Imagine a house of cards or a sand castle. Both of them are pretty structured and take a lot of time to put together properly. A lot of care has to be put in to make sure it comes out right. Same with proteins and the way they are made in cells. There are many different factors that go into making sure the protein is folded in a way that is generally stable and functional. It’s much easier to throw a deck of cards or a bunch of sand at them and make them crumble. The new form they take is much more stable, but not functional at all for its previous purpose. Once they crumble, it’s almost impossible for people to put them back the same way they were without a lot of time and energy. That’s essentially what prions do to properly folded proteins. Forget fixing it, don’t have the technology to identify and remove them from a living patient.
