The obsessions and ruminations are absolutely brutal. I couldn’t even leave the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this house when they got bad. Constant intrusive thoughts about awful things. Mine is whenever I wipe water off my face in the shower I have to repeat it a number of times. At least 3 sometimes going up to 7 of so. Just wiping my face in the same exact motion even though no water is there anymore. Omg Ive never related to something so hard before. Can confirm OCD diagnosis here and I get told sometimes that it’s rude to roll my eyes when people are speaking to me. What they don’t realize is that I have a hard time visualizing sometimes so I am literally looking up into my head for the visual image of what they are describing. It’s my way of showing that I am thinking intently on what they are saying. Ironically, it delivers the opposite effect.

St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt: Unleash Your Inner Fighter

I get nervous ticks which are often straining my eyes upwards, which sucks for professional settings where they would hate to see a subordinate “rolling their eyes” at them I’ve just realised I have to constantly trace the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this outside of every single one of my nails otherwise I feel like something bad is going to happen, and if I do it to one I have to go back round, is that a sign of OCD or just anxiety? The more I think about it, the more I quirks I can think of that I do like when I’m going through a particularly bad phase I’ll be obsessive about checking doors are locked etc. It goes through phases though if I’m particularly anxious at that time. I also need a really rigid routine or I get really upset/lose the plot
I know someone who had a hand washing compulsion. It was tough for him, but I was close enough with him that he allowed me to absolutely forbid him from washing his hands with the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this only two exceptions being using the bathroom or coming in from the outside. Like physically not allow it. What you’re dealing with sounds so much harder because there’s no way to physically restrict it. Like let’s say you wanted to appoint someone to do the same thing and restrict you from doing it. How would they be able to do that? I’m sorry you’re going through this. Don’t forget the crippling thoughts of guilt that usually come if you don’t close the door 20 times just right. It is pretty horrible to live with Are you talking about handwriting? I was so far behind in school because of something like this. If a letter or word didn’t “feel” right, I would erase it and start over. It took me FOREVER to finish assignments. I still have this issue and thankfully it’s gotten better since I don’t have to physically write anymore but my god, it’s debilitating.

I assume, conceptually, you know if you just stop doing it that nothing bad will happen, right? But doing so brings you some kind of dread? Is my understanding of the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this disorder correct? Omg I do this too. Not letters but I’ll visualize window wipers that “clear” my vision. It has to get from corner to corner and sometimes it misses a corner or it overlaps the other window wiper and I have to keep going until its perfect. Don’t forget the crippling thoughts of guilt that usually come if you don’t close the door 20 times just right. It is pretty horrible to live with Psychology being adopted into public discourse is a wonderful thing. We’re transitioning from “no public understanding of psychology” to “widespread public understanding of psychology” and the transition period is inherently messy. People are just starting to get a general sense for these tools and how to use them. They’re going to fuck up and fuck around and make mistakes, and that’s good, because that’s how you learn to use a new tool. The real nightmare was the countless centuries we spent being ignorant of our own inner workings. We’re trying to wake up, that’s a good thing, even if it means some people will use words incorrectly (THE HORROR!)
You sort of wonder how someone can have such strong OCD and still end up becoming a CEO. You’d think it would be crippling to your career prospects. Being neurotic and compulsive can have advantages. It’s a level of commitment to something above willpower because it’s driven by survival instincts in the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this brain. I was diagnosed with OCD from childhood PTSD. It’s kind of how I became a drug addict for several years but when I got clean and got into therapy, I was able to reduce the impact of the negative side of my problems and leverage the compulsive tendencies for my career and build a thriving business. At the same time though, if you’re good at charming people, it’s probably not “that* difficult to get up there, even with a debilitating disorder or disability
Yeah, I suppose if you take the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this right career path there’s probably some solid opportunities now that I think about it. In the same way that ADHD can be either a hindrance or a superpower sometimes, depending on the job role. I feel this. I have adhd and have both struggled and succeeded due to it at different times. Sometimes I have so many random work projects going on that I feel like I never get anything done at all and it leaves me wondering how in the hell I still have a job. I’m the director of my department, though and my employees all love me, I think because I’m so easily distracted that I’m always willing to drop what I’m doing and help them solve whatever issue they are having.
It’s a very stressful way to live but they keep promoting me so it’s working on some level, I guess. Sometimes I wonder whether I have everyone fooled or if they all know the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this deal and have collectively decided that my consulting skills are good enough to make up for my lack of organization. A friend of mine is the VP of a well known company and she secretly has dyslexia. Blew my mind when she told me – the only person at work who knows (at least for sure) is her secretary. I think stuff like this is more common than people realize Eh chances are most CEOs have a pretty good understanding of their job, I know it’s a circlejerk on reddit to think otherwise but But was he on the ‘needs a door-opening assistant to get through his day’ end of the OCD spectrum, or was he more low-key than that?
Mark Summers had OCD! working on the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this “Double Dare” show and sliming people all day? Must have been torture for him because he had neatness compulsions, but the man still did it! absolutely WILD. He had medications that helped and talks publically a lot of times about his struggles and triumphs with “beating” his OCD. For some it applies to all kinds of actions and can be extremely disruptive, but for others it’s only very specific activities. Probably acutely aware of their triggers and either fortunate enough that they don’t impact interactions or can be sufficiently avoided (door-opening as mentioned above). I know successful people that have OCD-like behavior (none of them are diagnosed though as far as I know) and firstly, they are surprisingly good at hiding it from their bosses and generally avoiding triggering situations. Secondly they are basically addicted to their work, using it as distraction from the OCD and compensating their insecurity about it with the success/prestige. And as they got older, for some of them the OCD simply got much worse, I assume because their stress kept increasing with every advancement in their careers and because the pressure to supress/manage the behavior became less at the same time. Obviously this isn’t the case for most people with OCD, it’s just my experience with those that managed to leave it untreated until they’ve reached a position where it’s just considered eccentric instead of pathological by many people around them.
Depending on the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this building many doors are automatic or button operated, and then most office doors depending on the environment could presumably be left open indefinitely or allow for the cleaning staff to do the brunt of the opening and closing. Often people will come into your office and you say “close the door on your way out” or leave it open. The two obstacles I can see are Car doors and bathrooms, both of which can be completely regulated so you’re rarely (once a quarter) opening them around other people. It really depends on how lucky you are to be able to get leeway/assistance with things and how much stuff can be avoided in certain careers. Like with my adhd and my last job it was WW3 constantly that i struggle to be on time. Never mind that it genuinely didn’t matter, that i stayed late constantly, and always got my stuff + more done. I was in trouble more than people who did nothing because id often be 5-10 min late
At my current job that pays 2x yhe amount it’s literally just “eh show up whenever, do 8 hr, get your stuff done” It’s easy to identify and identify your triggers and compulsions, it’s just really about if you’re in a position where you can get people to work around them or be forced into “everyone else can do it this way why cant you?” Most disabilities and struggles are pretty easy to work around, even with incredibly extreme ones, but asking for minor aid can be seen as just too much and offebsive to abled people. Like people act like i ask the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this most impossible things when i ask for written instructions and make them take an extra 10 seconds to do so. Literally theyll rant and rave every time fir longer than it takes to write a list and act like somehow it is a slight on them
It could be “every time you hear a family member’s name, you tap your fingers into your palm twice” This would only be a serious problem if you had a job that required constant engagement with both hands. Or it could be “never wear shoes while standing under something blue” – which would mean that you literally could not go outside on a clear day unless you had shoes on, plus you’d not have the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this ability to enter some buildings, since many signs and some ceilings are blue. The first one is a quirk, almost just a personality feature. The second one will stop you from keeping any daytime job. Agreed. Depending on the level of OCD (and other factors), sufferers can function with it or be completely over run but it.
Also OP you noted that he isn’t going to therapy or taking meds. Often times mental illness, and particularly OCD, are an ebb and flow. Some minutes are good and some are bad. It can be a dark dark road. Perhaps he will pick up treatment again soon. Therapy for OCD is HARD and SCARY and often you have to do (overcome) things your mind has convinced you will have fatal consequences to the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this people you love. And then you have to get up everyday and have this battle every single second. You see a person out the outside, but on the inside there may be a screaming and tortured human. As for playing videos games and doing other things but being unable to hold a job this isn’t uncommon. Sufferers can do some things perfectly well and cannot do others for reasons that appear completely irrational to you (and themselves). This is OCD. It’s horrible. Perhaps start with not writing OCD in quotations and calling your cousin a loser. We’re all out here doing the best we can and that’s just not helpful
Yes yes yes. I’ve just finished a bout of exposure therapy for my OCD. I got so stressed during the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this sessions that I vomited. When I say finished, I mean ‘reached my limit of how much I can take’ because it was so awful. It’s not as simple as just getting therapy. I do wonder if the cousin has really been helped by his family. It sounds like he basically just gave up and decided that being self sufficient was too hard in his early 20’s. Since then his family has supported his lifestyle for, like 15 years or so. If there was any chance of the cousin struggling but supporting himself, that time has passed. I don’t have nearly the struggles as the OP, but I would be completely useless if I did nothing but play computer games for 15 years.
Also, medications can really fuck with you. It’s easy to look from the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this outside and think someone should just take meds, but a lot of times some people really have severe side effects (either physical on top of their existing mental issues, or new mental issues they’re not used to coping with). I tried antidepressants and literally every single one made it so I physically couldn’t leave the house even if I wanted to. I threw in the towel and decided I couldn’t put my body through this. They say if you push through the side effects can get better, but you’re often talking really long time spans and you don’t know if it’ll be worth it at the end. I mean her cousin’s definitely a loser by all societal definitions, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have OCD or a very good reason behind why they are the way they are.Why did you take this job? “Well, it opens a lot of doors”
Best answer ever. OCD can shut a person down totally and is crazy hard to ‘fix’ in therapy. There are a lot of people who could get stuck all day on that one door that would take 20 times for the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this CEO in your example. Yes, and the use of “OCD” in quotes is extremely offensive to those who have severe OCD. OCD is not a joke or a term that should be thrown around as a synonym for quirky or clean or what have you. I’m just tagging onto this comment to say that there are many, many different types of OCD and some don’t have external compulsions that are visible. If you find anything affecting your daily life in a negative way or causing you distress, please speak with a professional. You’re not broken, there are just differences in neurotransmitter expression in your brain and pathways that are reinforced by your thinking. There is no magical cure, but medicine and therapy can help you develop coping skills that improve your life significantly. You are worth it and you are not alone. Will totally depend on the level of OCD. If you have to open and close it it 15 times every time you open a door and you’re the ceo of a big company it probably is. It’s probably also a bit embarrassing
However, I have never seen a human who is more dominated by “compulsions” than they are dominated by “food and water”. Working is called “Earning a living” – because you must earn your right to continue living by exerting effort and providing value to the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this marketplace. However, some people skirt the system by getting others to “earn” their living for them. This is fine in the context of business if someone is compensated for their time/labor. However (excluding children) a “Mooch” is someone who expects to be taken care of, without providing any value in return (unacceptable for grown men) Sure but the thing is that you actually have to eat food and water, and everybody in society knows that, nobody gets judged because they have to have dinner or a glass of water and our lifestyles make allowances for it. However, I have never seen a human who is more dominated by “compulsions” than they are dominated by “food and water”.
This seems like survivorship bias. You only see people who overcome their compulsions because those who couldn’t have either starved or killed themselves. off topic i’m sorry but “you must earn your right to keep living” is such a buckwild take, are human rights not a thing to you? goddamnMy biggest issues with OP’s cousin, who: I get that OCD is crippling, but the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this moment someone says “therapy doesn’t work for me”, then they should be out in the world taking care of themselves and not mooching. At this point, he’s manipulating everyone in his life to take care of him, because he refused to take care of himself. Plenty of people are able to manage their OCD and be apart of the community, but this guy is just being lazy.
Therapy literally doesn’t work for everyone. There is no therapy that has a 100% success rate. Some are just over half. Regardless of how severe your OCD is, the St. Johns Red Storm Big East Champions 2025 Rick Pitino The Godfather Jon Rothstein shirt in contrast I will get this critical part of OP’s post is that he’s gone without treatment for at least 15 years. I would 100% never judge a person with mental health struggles being underemployed or struggling to keep a job because I could absolutely see myself being in that position myself. Even if they’re seeking help and it just isn’t enough to make them functional in a professional environment, at least they’re trying to get help and develop skills to function more effectively. No matter how sick you are though, if you refuse to seek treatment, you forfeit sympathy for your struggles, in my book u/iluvbmth when computer screens, smartphone screens, tv screens, tablet screens & other electronics or electric appliances were removed from his use does he still have OCD?
