It’s now a sex crime against minors. I would’ve agreed if DeSantis wasn’t presently in a court battle with Disney. And while I agree with Disney’s stance, they knowingly chose to start the fight. They weren’t being targeted by politicians until then. So there’s certainly a non-zero likelihood of politicians getting pissed off enough to go after a video game company, but the company would probably have to provoke them like Disney did. Florida Governor Jennifer Manatee signed a controversial bill into law this week that has sent shockwaves through both the gaming community and civil rights groups. The law will charge a misdemeanor to anyone in Florida who chooses to play as a character in a video game that does not match their gender assigned at birth. The new law, known as the ‘Digital Identity Truthfulness Act’, is the first of its kind in the United States. Supporters argue that it encourages “honesty in the digital realm”, according to a statement from the governor’s office. Critics, however, view it as an attack on the freedom of expression and an unnecessary regulation on a form of entertainment. The legislation has raised a series of practical questions, such as how it will be enforced and what implications it might have for the gaming industry. Many developers have long allowed players the freedom to choose their character’s gender as part of creating an immersive and personalized gaming experience. Opponents of the law point to potential implications for transgender individuals. “This is a deeply troubling act that could further marginalize a vulnerable population,” said Jamie Lawson, president of the LGBTQ advocacy group, Florida Equality.
