Between a heating pad and a TENS unit, my pain is managed without anything that causes long term damage to my body. I would guess maybe side effects. But for simple illnesses I also don’t take meds as I think it’s unnecessary. But if you have real pain like kidney stones or similar, pain meds are a godsent (talking from experience). I don’t because pain serves a function. If my body hurts or I have a headache its a message to listen to my body. Take care of it so it can heal and function properly again soon. I avoid taking medication, because the only one that does anything for it is ibuprofen, which is bad for your stomach. I work with former addicts. A lot of them won’t touch anything from fear of swapping one drug to another and getting back into addiction. Using them for any pain makes them less effective and masks important signals you occasionally need to go to a Dr for. NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Aleve can be hard on the stomach. Also, for people with migraines, frequent use of pain relievers can cause migraine rebounds so you aren’t supposed to take pain relievers for anything. Opioids don’t work on me, so I minimize taking the OTC drugs that do work so when I truly need them (major surgery and multi day migraines primarily) my tolerance is at a minimum and they are the most effective Yeah, it’s weird! Over in the fibromyalgia forum, I learned that there really IS a genetic variation some peope inherit that causes opioids and some other meds to not work on them. Tramadol doesn’t work on me and it made me wonder… I’ve only had two experiences with opioids–two shots of fentanyl after a motorcycle accident, and a hydrocodone after surgery–with the same lack of effects. The fentanyl just made me nauseous (could’ve been the concussion too), and neither made me feel high or less pain My dad is like that for all prescription meds and just about all OTC meds, except aspirin. You know how on the drugs commercials, or on the take home pamphlets you get with meds from the pharmacy, they list the possible side effects? He seems to think that you WILL suffer from those side effects if you take the medication.
