Misuse of the term pedophile is actually very harmful and people should stop. It is important to distinguish between pedophiles and child molesters. A pedophile is simply someone attracted to children. This is officially classed as a mental illness, though research seems to indicate it’s technically “just” a sexual orientation (which of course doesn’t mean that it would be okay to live out, but it means it for example isn’t curable). Either way, it’s definitely not the pedophiles fault. The most important fact is that not only do a lot of pedophiles never molest any children, but most child molesters aren’t even pedophiles. Now I am not an expert, but I would say that ignoring this distinction can cause a lot of harm. You’re effectively communicating to pedophiles (who haven’t harmed any children) that they’re already horrible monsters. When people say shit like pedophiles should all be put away or executed, I doubt that helps the mental state of any pedophiles reading it. All it does is foster an environment where people like that are afraid to seek help. And when someone doesn’t seek help, that makes them more likely to eventually lose control and do something horrible. I know you were talking about the distinction between hebephilia and pedophilia (which I don’t really know much about) , but the comic you quoted still seemed to conflate both these terms with child molesters. Which is not good.

I never said that you’re at fault for any child abuse just because you accidentally used the wrong definition of a word. Of course the person responsible for child abuse is the child abuser. But if there is something very simple you can do to reduce the risk of someone becoming a child abuser, obviously you should do that? I would say that if there is a way to reduce the number of child molestations by reexamining our language and culture, we should probably do that. I feel like a lot of people prefer the dog and pony show of a child molester being arrested rather than the boring efficiency of preventing children from being victims. I sometimes also feel like people are really eager to demonstrate how against child molestation they are. It turns into this arms race of who can make the most radical statement on the subject, essentially performative debating. I’ve had discussions with people where they wouldn’t even concede that it may be worth it to show some empathy towards a pedophile if that could end up preventing a child from getting molested. They were willing to accept more children being molested, as long as they could continue their performative cruelty.
