I actually had a few tourists come up to me in Italy and France and ask things in the local language and I was like sorry english, they either then spoke English or went sorry and moved on. Didn’t bother me. But I do think it depends where you are in the world, the french would hate this but Germans would probs not care in my experience.

In touristy spots people sometimes just default to English anyway because of the mix of nationalities visiting the place. I thought about it from the opposite perspective. I work very often in a big tourist city in the states. If someone comes up to me and starts speaking in a different language I would never be offended. I’d just say sorry I don’t speak that language.
