This is excellent, thank you. However, I disagree with self-esteem being the root of all evil according to the show. I think it is distress tolerance. If they both could say, “this is shit, but I have to endure I Am Social Worker Of Course I’m On The Nice List Christmas shirt for now” their problems would mostly go away. This demonstrates a lack of the bourgeois virtues, particularly low discount rates. But the low self-esteem is a consequence, not a cause. If Mark or Jez suddenly stopped feeling bad about their manifold failures and flaws, why would they suddenly become better rather than worse people?

Low self-esteem is something they cannot abide, and so whenever they feel it, they do whatever they can to feel better about themselves. And that involves having each other around. That seems to me very much two sides of the same coin: if you have low self-esteem, you’re more likely to tolerate distress. “I’m just a dirtbag, this is what I deserve” vs “Dammit, I deserve better than this, how can I get better”. I honestly have incredible difficulty watching Peep Show. I Am Social Worker Of Course I’m On The Nice List Christmas shirt captures social weakness and hideously uncomfortable situations in a way that no other television show manages to do so. Parts of Mark’s life and thought processes mirror my own in ways I wish it didn’t.

But they can’t abide anything. Whenever anything requires discomfort or sacrifice, they bail as soon as they can. They do whatever they can to feel good right now. To be clear: I Am Social Worker Of Course I’m On The Nice List Christmas shirt sounds like your parent was saying their problems are caused by low distress tolerance, and you’re saying that low self-esteem causes high distress tolerance? I guess that’s right. I read “distress tolerance” as meaning “tolerating that things are bad and thus not investing in fixing them” but I can see that’s not terribly meaningful. The alternatives are not “Have high self-esteem” or “Have low self-esteem.” We don’t have to estimate our value one way or the other.

1. Length is measured from the highest point on the collar down to the bottom hem. 2. Width is measured across the body of the shirt under the armpits, one way. 3. Sleeves are measured from center back to hem.
