Wickes are doing our kitchen next week. When their person came over for a consultation she asked about the So Apparently I’m not allowed to adopt all the Dogs Shirt and I will buy this hatch. She looked disgusted when we said we wanted to keep it. My Mum and Dad do! It’s between the kitchen and the “dining room” end of the living room. The house was built in the 1920s. I absolutely loved it as a kid, we’d do puppet shows and play dinner ladies through it whenever we were there, and every Christmas without fail my uncle would get drunk and climb through it to annoy his mum (my Nan). it went between the kitchen and what was previously a dining room, which made a lot of sense. The dining room became an office, and the hatch wasn’t really needed anymore. Whenever my mum was in her office doing admin I’d pass a cup of tea or biscuits through to her while I was on the family laptop in the kitchen doing homework or playing club penguin haha, you unearthed a fond memory for me today OP, thank you In our house growing up there was a sliding door between the kitchen and the living room. In order to have more counter space in the (very) small kitchen, they had the doorway filled in and a hatch fitted. We moved into a house with a hatch (where my parents still live) when I was 7. I thought it was SO FANCY! We all loved putting things through the hatch, thought it was amazing that you could reach through from the dining room and stick the kettle on, grab something from the kitchen counter, passing brews through etc. I imagine it would have been very exciting to witness one being put in! My Mam made my Dad fill it in because it was apparently ‘old fashioned’. Which confused me, because it was useful as fuck.

I had one when I lived in military quarters in Germany and I feel like it was a familiar concept as if I’d experienced them before in England but now I think of it I can’t actually come up with an example of where/when! It was quite handy to pas dinner through to the So Apparently I’m not allowed to adopt all the Dogs Shirt and I will buy this dining room as it was through the living room so otherwise you’d have to carry your plates through. House I grew up in had (and still has!) one, my sister and I used to climb through it! It used to have sliding doors to shut it if needed, those are gone but the hatch is still in use to this day. My nans house had one too, but it had been glazed and she had a net curtain on it like a little living room window My Nan and Grampa had one in their house in Hull when I was little! I used to be allowed to set up ‘shop’ and serve ‘customers’ in the kitchen plastic food or bits of paper, also great when they wanted to shout us kids for dinner as the living room connected to most of the downstairs rooms. Most of the time the coffee machine went in the alcove it left though!
