Sounds like this incident occurred at low altitude while the plane was about to land though, so that wouldn’t be a factor here. wind and pressure differential are the same equation. It IS absolutely impossible (for a human) to open the door at a high enough pressure differential (wind speed). It’s physics, and mechanics of how the doors are designed (the open in before they move the rest of their motion). At low enough speeds (or pressure/altitude), it IS possible to open, but would require more force than when the plane is stationary. Nobody was thinking or did the math to include the scenario in the middle of a descent/ascent. See my comment above for a little bit better explanation. For reals… Poor guy gets off his shift, encounters a random cnn reporter that simply asks “can you open those doors?”. In hindsight, that’s a bad assumption to make. In short, as the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure decreases (and this can create a reacting force on a surface, or a pressure differential that can create fluid flow [air vacuums work like this]). A lower pressure on the outside of the cabin will “pull” the door shut (The mechanics of the doors are a bit complex, but they open to the inside of the cabin before they either go up or outwards). This principal is actually the same principle that cause the wings to lift the plane in the air. the wings are shaped so the air going over the top of the wing is moving faster than the air under the wing, so it creates an upwards force. It seems like magic, but that’s thermodynamics for you! Friggin love it!
