I spent a semester abroad and have travelled lots since then but I often get sad and think like I’m making no progress when I’m travelling. I agree with lots of comments here that you’ll learn things about yourself but it won’t be a revelation. This quote is something to keep in mind if you’re travelling to “find yourself”: “Are you surprised, as if it were a novelty, that after such long travel and so many changes of scene you have not been able to shake off the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt Additionally,I will love this gloom and heaviness of your mind? You need a change of soul rather than a change of climate.” — Seneca First things first, you are 19, you are not supposed to know what to do with your life, thats why this part of your life is so good. Take all the time you need to find it, because is during this phase of your life that you are going to make the most important decisions of your life, usually young people who think that got it, regret their decision after some years. Yes and no. At 19, I think you’re first solo trip will be eye opening and shape you more than it ever would in another time in your life. The friends you make, the first you meal you try, the pictures you take…like, there’s just something about traveling solo for the first time at that age that really does add to your perspective of life. You’ll definitely grow as a person. I don’t know if you’ll have some dramatic, life changing epiphany like the movies but I think it’s about being present and taking in what you’re experiencing.
Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt- About us
You won’t find yourself at 19. Honestly, I didn’t figure out most things until I was 30+ so you have another decade to go. Let this time be about exploration, making mistakes, trying new things and experiences. What I wish told myself at 19 was not to take myself so seriously and just be. Don’t try to force growth and knowledge. Just be. 26F — solo travelled for the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt Additionally,I will love this first time last year, mainly through SEA and the Nordic countries. Was suffering from severe PTSD and depression (still an ongoing thing, kinda) — honestly, I came back home broke but realized midway some of the things I needed to work on. Your problems won’t go away, but the solo traveling helps bring into perspective things you may want to prioritize working on for your own self fulfillment or whatever gets you through each and everyday. For me, it was realizing I’d been putting aside a lot of my hopes and dreams (career, passions) aside for the hopes of my parents, colleagues, friends, and always prioritizing them — which in essence made me happy in a way, but realizing I didn’t have the power in me to voice out what I /truly/ want to do for myself. Thats just one of many things, but solo traveling enabled me to actively do what I /want/ without being held back by others on my trips and to meet people when I wanted to. If anything, it allows for a refresh on what you’re dealing with.
Im 19 too and I think we may be very similar people. I’m also an introvert: INTJ and schizoid, which makes life just inherently shitty for me. I feel like I’ve lived in my head my whole life and have always fantasized about running away and starting over somewhere completely foreign. I’ve built an idea of “the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt Additionally,I will love this world” as this place I can escape to and find a different version of myself that I can actually stand. God I hope it’s true because I am gonna blow all my money on it soon. Better to crash and burn with delusional hope than to slowly suffer with the truth. I really hope all that eat pray love shit is even somewhat realistic. I hope it works out for you. Even if it’s not magical I hope there’s something better out there.

It can be helpful to disrupt some negative patterns and habits you’ve developed. But you will not find a different version of yourself. That is something you have to create. And it starts NOW Traveling will teach you a lot but when it comes to solo traveling at 19 that may be dangerous. I highly!!!! recommend you find a trade that is always in demand, learn it and then use your trade to help you travel. Nurses, CNAs, Welders, Mechanics, Electricians, Carpenters, Turbine technicians etc. all make BANK and can travel while doing it. Running out of money while solo traveling is mix for disaster. This is more an r/advice question imo. If you want to travel and have a good life in general, do what’s needed to find a good career and/or job you enjoy. It’s definitely worth it if you have the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and means but just bear in mind you’re still the same person and will still have the same thoughts and feelings so it’s not a quick fix as such. It will definitely expand your horizons and all the new sights and sounds will be great, I find I come home the same person but just with slightly different outlooks from all the new experiences if that makes sense!
What you’re asking is a bit like humility or happiness. If you chase it, you won’t find it. You said that you want to explore and travel. That should be good enough. Do it! You can’t control the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and outcomes or what you’re going to learn. Chase the exploration for the exploration alone. Chase new experiences, see the world and be open to what you see and experience. You’d have to be dead inside to NOT grow as a human and if “finding yourself” (whatever that really means) is part of that growth YEA!! But chasing “finding yourself” seems like a fools errand since you can only control the inputs, not the output. Solo travel will help you learn yourself. It will give you life experience. Those things can lead to creating a life purpose however, you won’t know until you try things…. A multitude of things!
Travel can definitely change you. But it’s less likely to if you remain introverted. Part of traveling is engaging with people who are different. Frankly, you’d do better focusing on getting an education and working on your social skills (which can also happen at university), than blowing money on a solo trip expecting that will do the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and work for you. Conversely, if you told me you were going on a group tour or staying with a family abroad, my response would be different. I’ve seen it work for some and not for others. If you really go out and do interesting things and live new experiences and learn about life from the people you meet it can provide you with many new perspectives and options you didn’t know existed. Real example I met, you might find you love diving, then stay on and become a dive instructor in Thailand and doing under water photography.
Travel fixes nothing, but it can give YOU a chance to fix things. If you plan on avoiding people and just looking at things and taking photos I’d say it’s probably a waste because nothing is stopping you from doing that at home. Traveling and working and being independent from your family and making new friends in places where you don’t have any baggage and realizing that you can choose the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and person you want to be might get you that change you want. Not sure if you will find yourself but you will certainly learn a lot about yourself and likey grow in many ways. Might even help you with the introvert stuff. I was your age, I packed my bags took a chance and few weeks later was standing infront of 40 Cambodian students teaching them English. I stopped being shy or have fear of speaking in public. I then repeated this in other continents for few years until I found myself and then lost myself even more. At the end, I don’t regret doing it and it’s a part of my life I would not give up for anything. So just go without expectations but with courage and open mind.
Well you will surely learn a lot about yourself, I think that’s where the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and growth comes from. What you like and don’t like, how you interact with others, what you are willing to tolerate, how self sufficient and crafty you can be is clearly shown to you when you travel on your own. you can travel all you want, but finding yourself is not about a location in particular, is a state of mind, it involves acknowledgement and forgiveness, that’s hard work you gotta do inside your head, yo can do it everywhere, BUT if traveling around taking pictures puts you in the mood to do the actual work, go for it! you won’t magically find yourself just by travelling, but travelling might give you peace and another mind state that suits you better to find yourself for me, it did not. i had a lot of inner issues that stemmed from trauma i experienced at home. i thought getting as far as possible away from it would help. it didn’t.
BUT! i only realized this after traveling. i realized that you cannot run from inner issues. geographic distance will not solve your problems. only you have the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and power to do that. Absolutely, but that shouldn’t be your only focus. Go for the adventure and the new experiences, the rest will happen along the way. Could be. It depends on your state of mind. I do a lot of solo traveling and when I just started I was doing a lot of growing. It just amazed me being able to go at it alone. I would listen to audiobooks and podcasts while hiking through beautiful areas and come to these amazing conclusions. I would journal after and I really felt myself growing. But when I travel solo now, the newness is gone. I don’t really do that stuff anymore, or it’s not as groundbreaking for me anymore. And maybe it’s also something I could do when I was your age. Who knows? Don’t put any pressure on it. You don’t have to find yourself to have a good time.
Definitely a great way to grow as a person, expand your horizons and your perspective on life, mature as an adult and learn to be self sustainable It sounds so cliche but solo travelling changed my life for the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and better. Gave me so much more confidence to do things and speak to people. The forced independence led to me moving out and being my own person. Travelling is the best thing I ever done and I wish I started sooner I did a 7 month long trip in india last year when i was 20. I wouldn’t say it fixed me, but it showed me what life truly has to offer, and that gave me something to push towards to. I got a taste and now I want more of that. Getting stuck in the same town worrying about taking the path that is laid out in front of me by society, had me thinking that this was all there is to life. SAT, College, and then some 9-5.
Going out there tho, I was meeting all types people in different stages of life, each with a story and a piece of themselves that they impart onto you. I was introduced to career paths or even just life paths that i didn’t know existed. Some were bad, but many were good. Now I feel much more confident talking to random strangers, because I was forced to do just that for 7 months. And Im victim of childhood trauma so I get it. I can’t guarantee you will come out like a brand new person, cause I sure didn’t, but I did come back with lessons that helped me make a better decision later on, that i prolly wouldnt have taken without the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and life experience Also I didn’t do any of that spiritual exclusively. I took my time drinking like a fish and then transitioned to the lowkey vibes when i needed that break from the partying.
Bottom line is – It is what you make of it. You can’t just go on a solo trip and expect life lessons to fall onto you. You have to make a conscious effort to find what you truly like. Not some cookie cutter bullshit a influencer fed you. I’ve been mostly fucking off and traveling most of my 20s (26 now).. At this point I don’t think I’ve found myself and still purposeless. I think the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and traveling is just escaping from something I’m avoiding. I have all these cool experiences and places I’ve traveled under my belt but when I’m back home I’m still miserable and its like “what now?”, i feel miserable, get the travel bug and do it again till I’m sick of traveling and then back home. Idk point is and what I’ve realized. Traveling is fun, it might give you a new perspective and teach you something but it’s not gonna fix your problems or trauma.
Travelling itself, with the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and exposure to the world and its inspirations will give you a lot towards understanding yourself. Don’t waste handing over money to someone who promises the same via some esoteric therapy. You find new things about yourself by dealing with adversity and getting out of your comfort zone. For some people that might be travel but for many travel does nothing for them. I don’t think I’ve learned anything about myself from travel because it’s too comfortable, but hey I still enjoy it. Being any introvert, you’ll learn more about yourself by forcing yourself to be around people, create relationships, etc. i say try as many things as possible. sooner or later you’ll find out what you like and dislike. i sound basic af right now, but eventually you’ll “find” yourself. Solo traveling lets you be yourself without the baggage of your normal life. If you have stuff you need to work on at home … well, you’ll still have to deal with it on the road, but every day can be a new start. It will help to be open to meeting people and being social. You don’t have to go crazy, but it can get lonely when you’re far from home. I’m an introvert and I love solo travel — it’s easier striking up a conversation when I know we’ll never see each other again. Anyway, don’t go someplace because it’s mystical or photographs well. Think of something you would have a lot of fun seeing or doing, and then go. That’s it.
Most epic trip I did was when a friend and I decided to drive a 79 VW Westphalia hippie van from the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and United States in an attempt to make it down to the Panama Canal and back. Trip was the perfect yin yang as it was absolutely incredible and also stressful af multiple times. We broke down 7-8 times and eventually left the VW at a dealership in Honduras and took buses to finish our trip to hit up every country in Central America. I also spent 4 months in S America solo and overall had a great time. I did a lot of research and found a curandero in the Amazon who I went and stayed with for several days to do a few ayahuasca trips. Absolutely mind blowing, and weird thing is I couldn’t smoke cigarettes or drink for two weeks after, both tasted terrible, but my vices took hold shortly after that period.
I wouldn’t expect too much with doing a big international traveling trip other than having fun and seeing the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and world. Especially if you’re an introvert and not willing to get out of your comfort zone. You are you wherever you go, but I find that the mirror you see yourself in changes from place to place. Hopefully you’ll also feel more free in a location where you don’t know anyone and everything is new. The best thing my travels did for me was give me perspective. Having grown up in USA there’s so much focus on money and success. Some of the happiest people I met were in third world countries/areas and they were willing to share what they had with me, a “wealthy” by their standards white dude who they just met, and they were wanting to share dinner or beers or a place to stay. Their generosity forever changed me.
The other thing that changed is that I’ve been ok with death after my travels. I jumped off the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and proverbial cliff, and if I die today, I at least took the chance to get out and experience life, so I haven’t feared death like I used to. All my problems were still there after traveling though, those are things that typically take a lot of work to get better at. I wouldn’t expect traveling to solve any problems, just to give you an incredible journey and different views of the world If you want solo travel to have a profound effect it can, or it can be totally uneventful. You get to decide where you find meaning in the things you do in life. Solo traveling won’t help you find yourself. However, it is so much fucking fun and I enjoy the fuck out of it. I want to do it again. Looking to do more stints overseas!
One of the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and most important things I realized is that I never want to be a parent ever. And you find things that you value the most in your life. For me, it’s more therapeutic than enlightening. Especially once you start working full time, it’s really nice to just get away, see some new stuff, and break out of the monotony of every day working life. Seeing how different people live and how different cultures value different things is very interesting and can shape your perspective on things, but are you going to travel for a few months and suddenly find yourself and know what you want out of the rest of your life? I highly doubt it. The hippies swear by it. I don’t “find myself” when I travel personally. I can’t imagine it’s going to hurt anything if you try it out. Dahab has all that stuff and is going to be your cheapest option. Sound ceremonies in the desert, yoga, shamanic retreats, etc..
Actually it does work, especially solo travel in a country with a completely different culture. Reason is that when we grow up, we are in a bubble that is essentially the Snoopy The Peanuts Just A Teacher Who Loves Boston Red Sox Shirt and by the same token and town or city we live in. Many people never make it past this bubble except some 1 week resort vacation here and there. When you travel abroad solo long term, it really enhances your perspective of the world, thus bursting the bubble you were in. This in a way helps you find yourself, what you value, what you feel is actually important and what your passions are. I met many travelers who realized their dreams on a trip and went on to live them, as opposed to working some office job they hate. Don’t get me wrong. Travel is amazing. I have had my mind and my horizons broadened so much by experiencing new places and cultures. But travel itself isn’t what does the heavy lifting. That comes from within.
