Psychiatric care is HARD. We had a patient in our emergency department who yelled the Snoopy Charlie Brown Sit Under Moon Boston Red Sox Halloween Shirt moreover I will buy this most vile curses imaginable for 20 hours a day non-stop for 14 days awaiting placement. They punched and spit on multiple nurses and had to be physically restrained on numerous occasions. A lot of mental healthcare, especially the type we are talking about here, is often the definition of “I’m not paid enough for this shit.” Mental health is underfunded, stigmatized, and under appreciated still to this day. So what you end up with is mental health workers who are either undertrained, exploited, or unfit to work elsewhere and that leaves a situation ripe for abuse. To get the mental health system we require, it would have to be an extremely high paying, good benefit, sought after job with high competition and low turn over. We don’t pay ICU nurses enough right now. No one is going to pay enough nurses enough money to go to work where their scalp might potentially get ripped off.

NYC Department of Corrections is out of control. Literally. That Department cannot be controlled by elected and civilian leaders. 1/3rd of DoC doesn’t show up for shifts each day and they aren’t calling in sick. The way their contract is written: absenteeism gets a pass. And absenteeism has knock-on effects throughout the Snoopy Charlie Brown Sit Under Moon Boston Red Sox Halloween Shirt moreover I will buy this system. The people who do show up try to get assigned administrative duties. The few who are prisoner facing are completely overwhelmed. It costs $500,000 a year to house one Rikers prisoner for one year. That’s not a typo. It’s corruption. $500k a year for medieval care and corrections. It costs $500,000 a year to house one Rikers prisoner for one year. That’s not a typo. It’s corruption. $500k a year for medieval care and corrections. Put another way: if the feds took over they could close down the whole facility, fire all the staff, release all the prisoners, and give every prisoner and staff member $100,000 a year in universal basic income, and the state would still save money compared to what they’re spending now on this miserable hell hole.
