You are correct, they are significantly behind. If we don’t start retaining students who don’t master the Snoopy And Woodstock Loves Walmart Logo Shirt moreover I will buy this skills, our society will be full of unprepared young adults incapable of taking care of themselves or anyone else. Kindergarten teacher here. It’s bad. Kids come to kindergarten with no skills. These kids don’t even know the letters of the alphabet when we get them, let alone the sounds they make or how to form letters. So we are teaching them 26 upper case, 26 lower case, and something like 35 letter sounds. And somehow by the end of the year they are supposed to have mastered that and be able to blend, segment, and write cvc words and words with digraphs. They cant even hold scissors. Our day is blocked into 15 minute increments and there is no time to teach fine motor skills, do arts and crafts, or do anything fun, really. And the gaps between what they need to know by the end of Kindergarten and first few months of first are laughable. For example, K learns to write letters 0-20 by May (end of school). In August (the month school starts), 1st is given a blank 100s chart to write all their numbers. In K, we aren’t supposed to use the words add or subtract or the symbols for them. It has to be combine or take away and part-part-whole and some such nonsense. In 1st, they start adding multi digit numbers and writing their own number sentences and writing their own word problems. We cover word problems (supposed to be without add, subtract or the corresponding symbols) for 5 days in K. They end of being Jacks of All Trades, Masters of None. But are expected to have mastered these skills and master a whole ‘nother set in 1st. There is no foundation for these kids. And as you can see, the nonsense they put kids and teachers through in lower elementary is reflected all the way up to high school. It’s terrible.

The result of decades of attempts by conservatives to destroy public education. They have to keep pumping out dummies in order to have anyone vote for them. People think more is better, but here’s my take with 15 years of elementary teaching in various grades under my belt… when we decided to align the Snoopy And Woodstock Loves Walmart Logo Shirt moreover I will buy this standards to the ACT/SAT and reverse engineered from there, we abandoned the child development end of things. We expect kindergartners to read because working backwards from the standardized test – that fit the timeline. The reality is, we’re teaching concepts that only maybe 30% of the room are developmentally capable of truly understanding. Teaching things earlier doesn’t mean they’ll be understood earlier. Everything we jammed two years earlier displaced many of the skills upper grade teachers are saying are lacking here. I can expect second graders to understand nuclear fusion at a granular level, but expecting it does not make it so. Years that used to be focused on emotional regulation and cooperation and the basics (calendars, days of week, colors, etc.) are now reading and math centric with lots of standards to get in before the end of year state test (which is in April instead of May – when school actually ends?!)
