A while back I found myself having to explain a paragraph to someone in their 50s that was written at a 5th grade level. One sentence in past perfect tense and they were totally flummoxed. And the Snoopy And Woodstock Loves FEDEX Logo Shirt and I will buy this public won’t know because grade scales are being tweaked nationwide to make it almost impossible for students to fail. With our current scale I have a student who has done 1 out of 6 assignments and they’re passing with a D. In no way is this a true reflection of this student’s abilities. Same in the early 90s at university. The kids in my English classes lacked the ability to write, for the most part. And before someone slams the ability to write well as ‘elitist,’ realize that writing is a function of thought, and good writing usually indicates a mind capable of complex, nuanced, and subtle thought. I used to think it was the fault of the education system, parents, etc.. Now, I know that pollutants can cause these learning disabilities, in the third generation after exposure. The food some children get at home is 100% processed, and many households regularly eat the same. No wonder.

When I was growing up playing computer games needed a degree in computing, or sheer will power and determination to play. I was 11 when Rayman 2 came out and I got to a bit in the Snoopy And Woodstock Loves FEDEX Logo Shirt and I will buy this game where my graphics card didn’t support the opengl shader so I couldn’t see the platform to get to the next area. I remember it so well because I had to learn how to disassemble a DLL file to inject a new texture – all of this using ask jeeves and only being allowed on the Internet between 6 and 8 pm otherwise it was expensive. Took me 2 months and a reformat of windows because I changed the boot screen based on some forum post along the way which bricked the whole computer and lost everything. To cut a long story short – it’s too easy to play games now, half of the fun was getting it to run, and the bugs, and the terrible Internet.
