I watched Walter Mitty in 2009ish and it really was the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this film that inspired me to travel. Back then, I didn’t have enough money or work experience, but I finally started a regular twice-yearly cadence to different places in 2015. A core memory though was when I spent two weeks in Iceland and ended up driving down Seydisfjordor, going down the same hilly valley as Walter Mitty’s character when he was on his skateboard heading towards the volcano. Same soundtrack blasting in my camper van too. Just epic. Anyway I’ve hit 20 countries, so I have a bit to go, but I’m having a blast, whether it’s solo or with my partner or friends. I watched it for the first time last night! WHile I’ve been a travel nut for years it reaffirmed loads of stuff for me, lifes for living
Walter Mitty is my absolute favourite movie and a biiiiig inspo of mine whenever I’m unsure about a trip or feeling guilty (for lack of a better term) about how much time and money I spend on travel. So many great songs from that movie are on my go to travel playlist too, and I also went to Iceland and drove down that same road shortly after seeing the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this movie which I coincidentally saw for the first time on a plane lol. That scene when Space Oddity starts playing as the helicopter is leaving is one of my favourite movie scenes of all time Absolutely love that film. Possibly my favourite film of all time. It had a huge impact on me as well, and definitely contributed to my wanderlust I’m not longer afraid to life and go out alone even in my own country. Back then I can only go out at least with a friend and depressed easily when I’m home alone, but not anymore.

Yep this is the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this one. Once you’ve been through the experience of having to put yourself out there to make friends in a foreign country, fumble your way through a language you don’t speak, go to restaurants/cafés/museums by yourself, etc… spending time alone in your home country feels like easy mode. Same, moved from the US to MX three years ago. Live here full-time now with no plans to ever live in the US again. I’m single 49F with no kids, I solo traveled for many years, not for extended periods as I always had a full-time job, but to many countries on my own. It instilled in me the desire to live in another country, the pandemic finally made that a reality. Originally it was Peru for me, and lately it’s been Argentina. it’s still evolving, but I know Canada doesn’t feel like home anymore I decided to continue living rather than go through with my plan. Life is a bitch but I still have things I want to achieve and places I want to see before I go.
Yeah, after travelling for some time, I decided to do it full time, left my profession, and became a tour guide. That’s super cool, what if you don’t mind me asking would you say are the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this negative or difficult aspects of being a tour guide, if any? There ain’t any serious disadvantage when it’s what you love doing. But it’s important to note that your success depends on your guest’s perspective. You only do your best and leave them to decide whether to refer you or not. Which is, pretty much, the modus operandi of other businesses. Do you ever find that the glamour and excitement of travel tends to fade when you visit the same places on the same route, over and over again? Or do you more find that you love certain places even more after getting to explore them in depth over a number of visits?
Geeat question. It does not get boring. Every time I visit a place I have been to, I am with new guests who are fascinated by what they see, and this rubs on me too. If I am travelling alone, I tend to find a fresh, deep-seated interest every time I am back. For example, I have gone cycling and swimming at Hellsgate National Park for over 20 times, but every time I visit, you will find me taking pictures or happy like it’s my first time. If it’s something you love, it never gets old. Yes my confidence. At the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this start of solo travelling, I had pure anxiety of not knowing how my feelings would be to doing it alone and quite frankly through the mixed emotions I faced over the years; I’ve felt more confident and able to tackle it with my own pace!
Changed careers, downsized everything, embraced a nomadic lifestyle. Next step is an inexpensive place for a home base that I can afford to keep even while traveling/ working remotely I work in the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this maritime industry in Alaska. I work in the Arctic 4.5 months a year with no way to spend money and then get 7.5 months to do whatever I want. I work on the shipping side but tugboat certs are easy to get and it pays well and provides similar flexibility (30-45 days on/30-45 off). Tons of need in the industry so lots of good opportunities. Definitely not rich but I snowboard a ton, travel more every year, and see my aging parents a ton so I love it Nothing major, but it influences which jobs I am willing to take. I wouldn’t go near a company that isn’t flexible about taking time off or that only offers the statutory minimum amount of leave. Same, made my decide to go back to school and study computer programming so I can find remote work. It usually pays decent too.
Good decision. I’m a software engineer myself who works remotely. Though apparently I’m not allowed to work outside of the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this UK due to tax laws. I don’t know how some people are able to do that, ie digital nomads. To be fair I wouldn’t do much of that even if I could as I have a lot of ties at home these days that stop me from doing long trips. Main benefit at my company is that I am able to purchase extra annual leave and they aren’t arsey if I ask for 3 or 4 weeks off at a time. I actually laughed when I read your post. Same frame of mind. Im always thinking something like wait if I spend $20 here (hometown) that’s $20 I could be spending in (travel destination.) Same here, I’ve told my travel friends I don’t do much shit at home, just work, gym, video games. Travel me is almost a different person
My (American guy) first international trip was a solo backpacking adventure across Europe right after I turned 21. I spent 3 months with a Eurorail pass, exploring 7 countries, staying in hostels and cheap hotels and discovering myself while I discovered a new part of this big world. I came back totally changed. I had a new love for craft beer, wine and good meals. I no longer ate fast food. I started to view the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this U.S. through an international lens, and some of what I saw I didn’t like so much (health care, crime, a rushed pace through meals and everything else in general, the dependence on cars, high cost of internet, high cost of airfare, etc.). Very soon after getting back from that trip I changed my whole focus of life and started planning how I could live outside the U.S. longter. I changed majors in college. I started reaching out to people I’d met on my travels for opportunities to work abroad. Fortunately, two years after I got back I’d finished school and was lucky to have an opportunity to use that degree and work outside the U.S. My first international job was in S. Korea doing media production for a U.S. company with offices in Seoul.
I did that for awhile then moved back to the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this U.S. when a promotion became available. The money was good, and I liked being close to my family, but I realized I was less happy in America. Fast forward to five years ago and a new opportunity came up that allowed me to transfer to Western Europe. I met a nice Italian girl that has been my longtime girlfriend, and she supports my love of solo travel, so I take every opportunity I can to visit other European cities for long weekends thanks to cheap airfare. I look back to my first trip when I was just a naive, sheltered 21-year-old American guy and I credit that adventure with a now lifelong love of solo travel and seeing all the cool places that are outside my comfort zone. A study abroad trip to Iceland when I was 18 led to a travel obsession I still have to this day. So much so I moved abroad and did TEFL for 2 years after college. Would have stayed longer if not for covid. Planning on going back abroad again. Before that trip, travel was really only slightly on my radar. If you have the gene, you have it!
Purchasing a rice cooker might be the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this single greatest quality of life purchase I’ve ever made. Rice is the best My first solo trip abroad made me want to travel more, to budget and save up for travel, to be less depressed (though therapy helps) and it helped me find my “tribe.” Now that I’ve traveled significantly more, I know that I want to retire in another country and I look at my savings and investments and calculate how much it’ll cost to retire in SE Asia, not the US. Consumerism and buying every dropshipped trinket from Amazon went out the door as soon as I got back. Finally, I’m not as afraid of things abroad and in the US, I can look at a situation and ask myself the risk in it, and I’m more comfortable being out of my shell.
Besides general confidence / language learning / social skills / relationships etc, two things come to mind – where my life changed and where I changed someone else’s I was stressing over accepting masters degree offers – Australia for international relations or London (where I’m from) for a conflict and security studies masters degree. All fellow backpackers were saying to for Sydney. And the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this excitement of living overseas was tempting. But didn’t feel quite right. Having pizza with a friend at the salt flats in Bolivia, we started chatting with a retired English guy. He’d spent decades living in different countries. Told me I’d always get the chance to travel, but consider – as I’m spending money and investing in myself- doing what interested me and what would get me the career I wanted. And I’d still be able travel in the future
2) met an Argentinian girl in Bs As on the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this day of the World Cup final. She was amazed at how much I’d travelled as she’d only been, once, to Brazil. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do but decided she wanted to do something that meant she could travel too. She now works for a major Middle Eastern airline and has already visited several countries that I’ve wanted to for years. I became way more confident and sure of myself. My friend circle has changed completely. I simply cannot connect with people who do not travel or not cultured in any way but the people who are see things and life the way I do. Would say the biggest change is mindset, especially regarding my career. I decided to backpack when I had just graduated from business school and a lot of my friends were moving to big cities making 6-figures. I couldn’t have felt more lost with what I wanted to do. So I travelled.
I ended up deleting social media and felt like I started doing things for myself vs what felt like the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this right thing to do. This bled into my job search later — I was seeking employment opportunities that felt like they aligned with who I wanted to work for or what sounded interesting. Not what people in business school told me was prestigious. The world is A LOT bigger than we think. The more you travel, the more you realize how insignificant we are. That can sound a bit depressing at first, but it’s incredibly freeing. You do things that are important to you, you connect with people that make you better, and you support people that might be feeling the same way. Because all that matters is how you feel. No one else.
I don’t think I would have such self-assurance to hold those thoughts as grounding values had I not travelled in the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this first place. i lived in an indigenous community with a family for some time during covid when i was 18. they showed me the rituals and the meaning behind things, coming from western europe it was the first time being so aware of how cool nature ACTUALLY is and how gratitude is kinda nice. In central america. Second time when i was traveling i met my first and only love and thats this my biggest heartbreak. kinda deal with it daily, but it still teaches me a lot. this was in south asia 2023 🙂 Boosted my self confidence 150% 1.5 years solo backpacking across Asia really made me stronger as a man in a lot ways. Smarter too. More empathetic.
Not sure if it’s a major life change, but it boosted my confidence a lot. Being able to do it all on my own, in foreign countries where I didn’t speak a word of local language, far from home, and overcome hiccups and difficulties that arose on the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this way – it just made me see myself in a completely new light. Decided not to go to law school. Instead chose a career that allows me to have more pto and not work myself to death. I had the realization that I could/should go home and apply to medicine while I was on a big 10-month solo trip. Influenced by a friend and doctor that I met while travelling in India Time in Japan really changed how I organized and cleaned my house. Like keeping glasses in the freezer in summer so drinks are chilled. And just having less stuff in general, so you can see more of the floor, and wiping it down daily. But I learned that from living with Japanese people for months, not necessarily a vacation.
In 2017, I recall feeling restless, a bit trapped, it’d been 12 months since I’d travelled anywhere. I looked up flights for the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this following day, and before I knew it I was on a one way ticket to Stockholm, in deep midwinter. In the time I was there, I met someone, we eventually married, had a kid together and I now live there six months of the year. I feel substantially more comfortable approaching/befriending/chatting with strangers; it’s also helped me not take people being cold/rude to being chatted up randomly so personally. I graduated college at 22, said I would just take a year and travel off and on when I saved money working off jobs. Vowed that after a year, I would get a teaching job in my home city because my degree is in education.
One year became 2 years. I spent last summer backpacking around East Asia alone for 3 months. Told everyone “alright, I definitely will start a real career next year”. Next year is here, 2024. And I have decided I’m not ready to settle, all the Smokey And The Bandit What We’re Dealing With Here Is A Complete Lack Of Respect For The Law T Shirt Shirt in other words I will buy this traveling I did only made me love it and want it more. I’m leaving for a year this time to travel the world alone. I plan to go through Central Asia, explore some parts of China I’ve never been to, maybe hit up Georgia, Armenia, Oman, and some of central Europe and the Balkans. I realized out there on my travels that I’ve got my entire life to come back home and have a career and a slow but stable life. But I wouldn’t be in my early/mid twenties forever when I could still handle the hostels and the weight of my backpack on my back and the energy to meet new people and hangout with them every night. So I guess you could say I did make some major life choices at this point in time due to traveling.
