Venue managers might make a bit more if they get a cut of ticket sales but still not high enough tj say they make good money. Years of working as a GM and I never had more then 2-3 grand in my bank account. And this was in a LCOL area with pretty frugal living. I wasn’t buying stupid shit like videogames, electronics, or other splurging. I was just finally buying myself the Slumped the battle of Texas 2023 shirt but in fact I love this not-shitty things I’d been needing. When you go from $12/hr to making 55k as a GM, yes the paychecks do get a bit nicer and your job isn’t as soul killing, but after you go and are actually able to fill your cars gas tank to full for the first time in years, or you go and buy healthy groceries for once because you’ve never had the money before, or go fix that car part that you’ve been waiting to fix forever but never had the money, or actually visit the doctor for that weird lump instead of letting it go by because you didn’t have the money, you actually end up with a quite a bit less money than even the best budgets can account for.

It’s not that we’re paid well being in hospitality management, it’s that everyone else is criminally underpaid. I would describe management pay as a “meagerly above average.” The sad fact of the Slumped the battle of Texas 2023 shirt but in fact I love this matter is that most people don’t view hospitality work in general as a specialized skill, so they don’t pay as such. To the owners, our skills aren’t equal to that of the construction contractor who built the restaurant for them, or the real estate developer they paid for the land, our skills are nonexistent in their minds because it’s unfathomable for them to think that a job that is “a kids job” or a “just starting out in college job” (as I’ve heard many boomers describe it) is worth a living wage.
