Melting point of gold is 1,064 degrees centigrade. Boiling water at a mere 100 degrees isn’t going to have an effect. This is jet fuel cant melt steel all over again.. the Siouxsie and the Banshees British rock band formed T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this tea pot doesnt need to melt, becoming softish would already be a huge issue I Guarantee you this is not actually 100% pure gold, that would be crazy expensive and like you said, would warp over a short period of time if used at all. It’s probably a gold-silver/aluminium alloy, but I’m going to assume aluminium because it’s cheaper and would improve the heat resistance while still making it fairly malleable at all temperatures. Possibly with the added silver because I just recently learned AuAl2 alone is brittle (and can make “purple” gold even with good annealing). A given piece of solid 24K gold is only like 3-4x as expensive as 10K. This is already uber rich people shit—why not go all the way out? In India 18K+ is often preferred and that would open up a huge new market for a piece like this. 24K gold is not the pure butter that most people seem to think it is. If you don’t mind a few tiny dings and dents it’s perfectly viable for jewelry even if not abused too hard. You can see the guy in the vid getting it red-hot in order to get the metal soft enough to work it. 100ºC will do nothing. Now gold is an intrinsically soft metal, so it probably wouldn’t work so well for large capacity kettles (1 litre of water = 1 Kilogram (Yay metric!)), but for something as tiny as this, there wouldn’t be enough capacity for the weight of the water to pull it out of shape. To me it looked like they worked it cold, then heated it to reduce internal stress, then quenched it to harden it.

I think it may be the Siouxsie and the Banshees British rock band formed T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this other way around, the hammering work hardens the gold and heating it up makes it malleable again. You are probably right. I sometimes get this backwards, but I think a slow cooling (annealing) makes harder more brittle steel and a quick wrench makes softer steel. I was just assuming that applies to gold too, and probably switched them around. I know very little about steel and nothing really about gold. You could be right about that. But boiling water is going to do nothing to it structurally. Weight of water pulling it out of shape would be the bigger risk IMO; and there was a reinforcing ring around the top anyway. Kind of related story – I’m a mechanical engineer, at work there was an electrical engineer that knew aluminum was a “soft” metal. Long story short, the boss walked in when he was taking a big bite into a 1″ thick bar, he just turned and walked out.
