When it is free, everyone will visit hospital when they have the tiniest cough. Does the medical system have sufficient manpower to cope with it when such demand is justified, and how the system adjust itself when such demand is unjustified? This relates to the general wealth of the country, and the level of ethics of its population. What works in Scandinavia doesn’t mean it works elsewhere. Having moved to a country with public health (like many programs around the world), I can tell you that you have no idea how it works. Hospitals make immediate decisions (triage) and people are sent to their local clinics if they don’t need to be seen at the hospital. But most people aren’t as naive or ignorant as many Americans and know they will be seen much more quickly if they go to the clinic. How is that different from health insurance? People with no problems pay for insurance that helps people with problems.

Because it’s not actually free, it’s funded by taxing you more. I lived in a country with socialised healthcare and paid a ludicrous amount of tax for it, yet barely used it. I also lived in a Euro country with insurance based health care. Was far cheaper and substantially better Nothing is free. Someone pays for it. The government is the worst manager of money anywhere. Private sector is always more efficient than government. One of the problems is corruption. Few patients, doctors and hospital staff can rig the system. Create fake health records, do no treatment, and charge the government. Or patients can end selling their medications on the black market. The system would be very easy to abuse.
