If you’re saying that these exhibits show people will do whatever seems expected of them in order to feel like they’re a part of something, that seems like a pretty interesting point to me. The goldfish dying here sucks, but we kill countless fish every day. I think that getting people to talk about whether or not this is a problem is worthwhile. How should we treat animals, and who is responsible – the person who sets up the system that makes poor treatment easy and attractive, or the one who pushes the button? Audience-as-participant is not a new concept, so it wouldn’t surprise me if a person who pushed a button thought the exhibit genuinely wanted someone to do so. It wasn’t “murder someone/something in cold blood”, it was “do the thing that the creator expects of you”. Just the same as responding “who’s there” after someone says “knock knock”. I could be wrong, but I don’t think killing a goldfish here is the same decision making process as coming across a goldfish in a pond and just killing the thing because you can.
