When this happened the ugly ones broke the previous trend and tried to pair with the attractive ones. The interpretation was that people generally understand how attractive they are and try to match with people around their attractiveness level. I’ll never understand why people always mention this study when it comes to attraction. Real attraction is too subjective for that, unless a person is the type who just goes along with whatever society tells them to be attracted to. Were the participants told the number was based on their level of hypothetical attractiveness? Was their “real” attractiveness ranked first by a bunch of judges? Like what would be the motivation to strive towards some arbitrary higher number? Being told to match up into pairs, but also try to be the highest number possible are kind of contradicting goals. Trying to match with the highest number would be a waste of time since you can’t change the number that was assigned to you. And since people aren’t actually numbers irl, and attraction is subjective, who actually cares if a “4” is with an “8” in real life? I feel like realistically I would just pair up with any random number, look at people’s reactions and body language to our pairing, and hope our numbers match. Or even just count all the other numbers of my gender and see which one is missing to find out what my number is by process of elimination. Any type of real attraction wouldn’t even be relevant while participating in this study. It’s more of just a math game.
