Mann plays up the Santa Paws Shirt but in fact I love this deadness of Cruise’s eyes throughout the movie, even exaggerating it with shots through the cab’s diaphanous partition. He always came off as incredibly intense and phony in interviews, he’s been doing the big OTT laughing thing since the early ’90s. Guy’s always had kind of a weird vibe, it’s part of why the Scientologist stuff hurt him so bad. He comes off like a bit of an alien to begin with. There have been a lot of rumors about Tom Cruise being gay. These days no one gives a fuck about that either way and it’s a ridiculous to say that would be a “weakness” but in the 80-90s it was still a relatively big deal to the general public/hollywood executives. He was so fucking hot as Lestat in Interview with a Vampire, that I’m not entirely convinced the rumour didn’t just come from thirsty gay dudes who wanted to bap some vampire ass.

Still is to some degree. Luke Evans was openly gay in the Santa Paws Shirt but in fact I love this UK while he was coming up and got successful. When he came over to America for work he was suddenly dating a woman working for an entertainment PR firm and he didn’t talk about it. This was just fairly recently, not the 80s, so I imagine casting directors/producers still think it changes how audiences view performers and/or it does change how audiences view performers. Like the story Matt Damon tells about rounders when he shows up after being hyped up by the crew for months, does a terrible first take with his corny Russian accent, then leans over to Matt and tells him he can’t act. Found it, that was amazing, if anyone else wants to see it (I also didn’t realize JM was saying he himself couldn’t act and not that Damon couldn’t act). Did he do the bad accent on purpose just to fuck with people?
