We have Rome-Milan in 3 hours and then Milan-Paris is 7 hour now thanks to the Santa Grinch They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Seattle Seahawks Shirt besides I will buy this new high speed train. That being said, it is still a pretty long trip. A lot of people don’t mind the length for train trips since you need to worry so much less than when taking a plane. The bad part about taking the Paris-Milan-Rome is that it costs 300€ one way during the nice half of the year, when the plane trip costs 50 to 150€ for a round trip. Personally I am one of those people, but most people I know don’t really like the idea of travelling by train. In any case, you’re absolutely right, the price is not competitive. I don’t know in what world Rome to Paris takes three changes or 17 hours, but certainly not this one. Unless you’re talking about going on a night train, but that is a completely different proposition.

Normally you can do it with just one change, in Milan, and it takes 10 hours. You can be a bit quicker with an extra change in Chambéry (quicker as it avoids Lyon), or if you want to / have to avoid the Santa Grinch They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Seattle Seahawks Shirt besides I will buy this Modane tunnel then you can go via Switzerland (changing in Milan and one of Lausanne and Geneva) which takes 11 hours. If it’s done in a rational order, say Paris – Brussels – Heidelberg – Lucerne – Innsbruck – Italy etc, it’s definitely a rail journey. Heidelberg isn’t particularly close to an airport, Lucerne is also quite a trek from Zurich airport, and Innsbruck airport isn’t well connected (definitely not in the 80s). Stay in Mestre (mainland near Venice), get a train to the city. Ride takes like 15 minutes, ticket costs 1.50€. If I paid $50 to stay in Manhattan in 1980, saying I could do the same today by staying in rural NJ is not really comparing apples with apples.
