There were four top-level posts when you posted this, and under 40 comments total. Three posts (two by the Sanford And Son Salvage We Buy And Seel Jink Vintage T-Shirt in addition I really love this same person) qualified as something that might, with a sufficiently low threshhold, be atheist takes. Two of those three were at the top level. None seemed particularly egregious to me, and I am absolutely not an atheist, but people have different tolerances and perceptions. Most of the discussion was about how the image depicted insincere trolling and no gotcha was contained, or the OP arguing passionately that the gotcha was successful and indicative. tl;dr: I suspect confirmation bias made the ostensible dumpster fire takes stand out as more egregious and numerous than they were. 147 more repliesI understand religion very well. I’m not truly an atheist, but I don’t follow anything similar to Christianity, which is the big one where I live. Part of understanding religion is realizing that truly good religious people are rare. Most are just decent-to-meh people who kind of just go with the flow of whatever religion they grew up with, and the others just hide behind their religion so that they can disguise their hateful views as religious freedoms. Unfortunately, where I live, the nasty ones are using their religion to justify passing laws that affect everyone, not just the people in their (usually pretty niche) section of their religion. Since I don’t follow their religion, I shouldn’t be affected by their very specific “moral principles”. So long as I do no harm, I should be allowed to live as I please, with whom I please, and present as I please.

exactly. and op did not argue against that, they argued against the Sanford And Son Salvage We Buy And Seel Jink Vintage T-Shirt in addition I really love this same cultural irredentism that you just mentioned is bullshit. Love religious Vs atheist debates cause neither side can understand each other at all and both think they’re winning at the same time It’s almost like some people use “atheism” as an excuse to be as judgemental as the worst kind of evangelical, while thinking they have the moral highground. Which… is exactly the behavior of the worst sort of evangelical. Also a lot of preaching. “Atheism is the ONE TRUE BELIEF, and if you don’t believe that you’re insane and likely terrible!” Hmm, who does that remind me of…? The twist is that I’m not a Christian, but the arguments are always assuming “religion”= Christianity and that all religions are the same, and that all religion is based on, specifically, “what you believe.” Having said that, they’re free to believe in anything thry want as long as they don’t harm or force others to believe the same. Saying “see what I mean?” when you didn’t actually make any specific point is such horseshit. This is an annoying person. As someone who has studied religions for the past four years in college, the best way of explaining religion is through a concept called “intuitive theories”. Intuitive theories are basically humans way of explaining the world around them without access to scientific explanation. For example, one wouldn’t be able to explain the complexities of our solar system without knowing the science behind it, yet it doesn’t make any of those scientific facts that have been discovered any less true. Religion, as many on this thread have already pointed out, started as a way for a collective of humans to try and explain the world around them without access to scientific reasoning. Then of course over thousands of years religions have shaped and taken on different forms from which they started. Why then do they still exist if we have access to scientific data now? Well it’s simply because science requires effort, it needs to be discovered and tested. Whereas religion or intuitive theories simply require one’s belief in it. They can control the narrative of that theory however they want. Science doesn’t do that, it challenges these notions and most people don’t like to be challenged.
