This justification wasn’t given, but I now suspect it was the real reason! I don’t think you wear the brake by doing it, but just yanking on it without pressing the button seems so uncivilised. This is false, it is metal on metal contact and realistically would not cause damage to the handbrake, not within its life time. It’s a ratchet – it’s like saying a ratchet spanner wears out when you make it ratchet, therefore you should take it off and spin it manually. Obviously, that’s nonsensical. The ratchet exists for a reason. You say that, but I had a 1960 Morris Mini Minor that wore its handbrake ratchet out, and it would jump off. It does happen, but only in the most extreme of cases. The other reason why people say you shouldn’t do it is over-stretching the handbrake cable by yanking the handbrake hard continuously, requiring adjustment and replacement sooner.

If you say so, I always assume something is getting battered when there’s clanking going on. Noise is friction. I dont think it matters at all. One way will “wear out” the button faster, the other will “wear out” the ratchet faster. Neither will actually wear out within the car’s lifetime People who don’t push the button are the same ones who scrape their chairs across the floor when they get up/leave a table in a restaurant. Haha, I don’t use the push button but this made me laugh. It’s interesting to me how many people dislike the ratcheting noise. I actually like the noise, the same reason I will grab my ratchet spanner and spin it in my hand to hear the ratchet mechanism. There’s a different way to stand up? Do you pick up your chair when you get up? Have I been missing something that everyone else does? This thread has made me question everything I thought I knew. Like the time I found out coca-cola doesn’t dissolve a tooth overnight.
