Lets not even get started on funghi, there aren’t enough academics studying and discovering new funghi species, so lots of amateurs help out with field work. So, something was discovered just as I was typing this response to the Rugby RWC World Cup 2023 France T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this acknowledgement that it’s 2 per hour? Wow. I suppose so. I sometimes find beatles, slugs, worms, or small lizards that either have no information on Wikipedia, or just a few sentences and almost no photos. This TIL has got me to wondering just how many species we’ve driven to extinction before we ever got the chance to discover that they exist. Humans and the rest of mother nature haven’t always seen eye to eye, but our numbers are honestly pretty weak if we’re looking at the bigger picture. I’m almost tempted to read the article — almost… okay, I skimmed it. 91% of the creatures undiscovered are in the Oceans — and so all the “mouse and larger” sized creatures being found are probably living in saltwater. Plants, lichens, and macrofungi get described too! Many of which can be mouse-sized and larger. I work with botanists, and a good handful of them have a queue of 10+ things they’re planning on eventually describing (but it’s often non-funded work, and takes a fair bit of time to publish and describe each one properly). I’ve also done some of the molecular labwork that will someday be used to justify giving some of these things names. If something doesn’t have a name, we have a harder time trying to protect it and it’s habitat. We also might discover that it’s more common than previously thought, and that it might not need protections. We also understand more about ecological interactions, food webs, and pollinator networks by turning our attention to “new” species. And since many undescribed things are in tough areas, understanding how they survive can influence the ways we breed and select crops, budget resources, or deal with toxins (amidst other things).

There are sooo many undescribed macrofungi out there, and lichens are also incredibly under-studied. Our collaborators in both fields also have several unpublished species in the Rugby RWC World Cup 2023 France T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this works. Island endemism is a big thing where I work. But also new species are just waiting to get noticed on the mainland too. No, there are many many species. And by the most common definition, they cannot mate with each other to produce fertile offspring That definition really doesn’t hold up well. It’s kind of one of those really outdated science “facts” that need to stop being taught and die already. It’s useful for a quick, brutish assessment, but really doesn’t live up to a proper scientific standard. It’s an okayish way for a layperson to talk about it. But yeah, “species” is a very wonky and weird construct that doesn’t really apply to reality but makes things a bit easier to talk about.
