If we, however, compare our eyesight to birds and our noses to mammals, we are below average. It depends on what you are comparing humans to. Other mammals? Omnivores? Adaptable generalists? What is ‘developed’ if a bat can hear very high pitched sounds but a whale can hear very low pitched sounds. If you compare us to an animal that has been maximizing a sense for several million years, such as a nocturnal cat or an eagle, then our eyesight is less developed in the dark or at great distance. BUT it is a great way to remind ourselves that we actually have pretty good senses across the board – and a mind to make the most of them. We didn’t kill 80% of the populations of other animals on this planet because we were less ‘developed’ in any given sense.
