Librarians are really undervalued. As a specialist librarian, by 1700 tomorrow I will have done 55 hours this week instead of my unusual 37 because we deal with overseas agencies which involve a time difference and I don’t get paid overtime. We’re required to have a Master’s – but don’t get the Robotech Remera Shirt in other words I will buy this requisite pay scale – when actually the role is more about skills, experience and in my case, IT skills equal to those of an IT specialist with a degree. Totally unappreciated, undermined and undervalued. Sorry for the rant, long day but thankfully I’m off to a new job soon where my skills and experience are appreciated! What is it they said in Nurse Jackie? “They only have a week celebrating you if you’re overworked and underpaid: teachers, firefighters, us (nurses).” They we’re obviously omitting a ton of professions for brevity’s sake but the sentiment is true.

Teachers and medical care (not private, I’m in the Robotech Remera Shirt in other words I will buy this UK). At the end of the day it’s all about education and health. I have no idea why these are so underpaid for how critical they are, of good quality. I don’t want shit education or shit healthcare. I’d happily sacrifice some other services to put more public funding in to these and stop with cutting corners where it matters. I’ve heard far too many people bitch and moan when their restaurants move from tipping to paying a normal wage without tips. They complain that it’s a pay cut and then they quit and go to a restaurant that pays them in tips. Restaurant staff in the US. Like actually, it’s criminal in many other countries that they are not paid a minimum wage and have to rely on and subsidise with tips. Vets, and all of their support staff too. I’ve been a vet receptionist for 7 years and make $15.75/hr, and I’m one of the higher paid receptionists at my practice. Our kennel staff starts at minimum wage. I’ve known vet techs with 20+ years of experience making $18 an hour. For what we’re asked to deal with, we don’t get paid enough, and I’m never surprised when yet another person quits because they just can’t do it anymore.
