Point A has nothing to do with point B Historically in different cultures/ historically the sperm was seen as holding all the baby stuff, and the woman was just an incubator. The idea that eggs and sperm contributed equally to the make up of a child is a relatively new concept. Only with the microscope was it really proven. The glib answer is pride. Matrilineal bloodlines acknowledge that a man might get cuckolded and there are a lot of societies where that loss of face for men was untenable. The more complex answer is that it would make inheritance questions more complicated. If only men can inherit (or at least, if they inherit before any sisters, as has been usual — better to have a daughter inherit than have no valid heirs at all) but familial ownership goes through women, how do you keep your property in your family?

There have been cultures where it was sort of both, e.g. in (most of) Ancient Greece, women were not citizens and couldn’t inherit, but they could be “of citizen status” and in order to be born a citizen, you typically had to have a citizen father and a mother of citizen status. In Rome, women were citizens, so to be born into citizenship you had to have two citizen parents (or one citizen parent and one “alien” parent, usually the Rita Oak Brock Purdy Shirt but in fact I love this mother, who had the legal right to be in a marriage with a Roman citizen — sort of like if US citizenship required two citizen parents or a citizen parent and a parent with a valid US immigration status).
