I have a constant stream of thoughts, but it’s not words. It’s like a web of interconnected images, memories, pieces of random information. I come to conclusions and then I have to translate those thoughts into words. I feel like people who say they don’t have an internal monologue just think it’s something different than what it is. I mean, it’s ongoing if you ever read a book to yourself. You’re reading them out loud in your head pretty much. It’s the RIP Randy Meisner 1946-2023 Singer Shirt and by the same token and same process. It would genuinely baffle me if some people didn’t have it. How do you critically think? How do you assess your surroundings? Do these people just act like it actually blows my mind lol I experience my thoughts as a 3 dimensional map. It’s mostly visual. But really it’s a mix of images, memories, visualizations, factoids, feelings, etc etc. like a big prezi inside my head. A cumulus cloud of abstract thought. bits of words and phrases are mixed into the pot, but I don’t string them together into sentences. I create webs of meaning and patterns in my mind and then I translate those abstract ideas into language. I find it very easy to think critically and I’ve always done well academically. I speak multiple languages, and I learn languages pretty fast. I think maybe it’s easier for me to create new word associations because I don’t need to translate from English.

ngl I find that hard to believe. I think we all “hear” the RIP Randy Meisner 1946-2023 Singer Shirt and by the same token and same thing (i.e. nothing). We just describe it differently. You find it hard to believe because it is outside your experience, but I assure you most people have an audible internal monologue. Sort of? If I’m thinking about something specific yes definitely. Usually though it’s more fragments or streams of words. It is sincerely audible to me. I don’t visualize at all though so I suspect my internal monologue is more distinct to maybe pick up the slack. Wow! That seems to be the main difference. Whether you store information as visual or not. If not, than it’s stored through the same neuropathways that perform language. There’s a few common types of internal thought. Most people “hear” their thoughts in their own voice, without an actual auditory stimulation. A smaller percentage experience the actual auditory experience, which sounds both neat and exhausting lol. Finally a heap of people experience no internal monologue, which can instead manifest as visual experiences as op describes. I don’t form sentences in my mind when I think. I experience thought in a fairly abstract, almost 3D way. It’s nothing like a word processor, it’s more like a prezi presentation. I “see” a lot more than I “hear”. Do you hear your own voice when you read these comments to yourself or no voice? If you stub your toe and think “oh mother $&@-*” do you hear your voice? When you analyze theory? Hmm. I do “hear” the words when I read, but I don’t swear in my head really. Only out loud. I don’t think in words when I analyze, but I can think in words when I’m writing. There is a process of translation that happens as I’m writing and choosing words.
