She and the Duke of Windsor, future King Edward VIII, made spiteful fun of the duke’s sister-in-law, the sweet-faced Duchess of York, calling her “Cookie” in reference to the scurrilous rumors that her mother was the French cook at her childhood home of Glamis Castle. When Edward VIII abdicated the throne “for the woman I love,” he thrust his stuttering, ill-prepared younger brother into the role as King George VI, and his wife, the former Duchess of York, became Queen Elizabeth. She would come to exact her revenge, blaming the Windsors for inflicting the pressures of the job on her husband and ultimately for driving him to an early grave at the age of 56. (The king, who was a very heavy smoker, died of coronary thrombosis.) Their daughter Princess Elizabeth ascended to the throne and, as we all know, has devoted herself to the sacred vows that she made at her 1953 coronation and to the soul-destroying litany of events that make up the royal year with unimpeachable diligence and dignity for nigh on 70 years.

The Duchess of Windsor’s embrace of maniacal chic seems to have made the RIP Helena Mccrory 1968 2021 Polly Shirt but in fact I love this royal family flinch from the very notion. So the idea that the Meghan appears to have modeled her formal looks on the Duchess of Windsor’s tailored perfection (Wallis wore Mainbocher and Schiaparelli, Dior, and Saint Laurent; Meghan wears Roland Mouret, Stella McCartney, and of course Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy) and her off-duty looks on, well, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, seems like some sweet sartorial revenge.
