Thankfully, they did perform an autopsy before the child was laid to rest (this all happened on Feb 7 but is just now getting national press traction. The sequence of events – kid is assaulted, kid goes home, parents take kid to hospital, hospital tells them it’s nothing and sends them home, parents take kid back to hospital a few hours later, kid dies. I’ve not seem any reporting saying the fight directly caused the death. It’s certainly possible there was some other cause. I know a tbi hasn’t been ruled the cause yet. While it is possible (hopefully there will be an autopsy) it seems likely the poor kid suffered a head injury that killed them hours later probably from a subdural hematoma or something similar. That’s not what TFA says. The headline implies (using the word “after”) that the death was direct result of injuries sustained in the fight. But according to the article, the death might have been suicide. Did they? The headline on NBC reads the same as the title on the post (I’m not OP.) I agree that NBC is blatantly ignoring the reality of the situation with their bullshit ‘fight’ headline.

Out of all causes, the highest likelihood is TBI – but we cannot say for sure until the actual cause of death is disclosed by the medical examiner. One thing to note – if head injuries were severe, a CT scan would almost certainly have been performed at the hospital after the fight. Where did you read this? The article states that the fight was broken up by students and a school employee within two minutes, then all parties involved were sent to the nurses office. Are you claiming that this news article is blatantly lying?

Their grandma was called to say Nex had been in a fight and is suspended for 2 weeks and needed to be picked up. They did not call an ambulance after obvious head traumas. Edit: I’d also like to add that there is an influencer named Chaya Raichik who (runs Libs of TikTok and) spews hateful trans and LGBTQ+ rhetoric to her 1.3+ million followers. Her hateful tirades have reportedly been linked to nearly 3 dozen threats to schools, libraries, hospitals, and businesses across the US. How is this related? Well, she also sparked outrage towards a teacher who was a close mentor and supporter of Nex and their identity, to the point where he resigned from the school. The teacher was supportive of LGBTQ+ kids and their identities, and belonged to the community himself, so he was targeted. To the extent that a US senator singled him out in a social media post calling him a predator. Last month, she was appointed to the state’s Library Advisory Committee by OK’s Superintendent!!!! That superintendent, not 2 weeks after Nex’s death posted about “woke college professors” in reference to DT being placed as the worst US president. But he has not commented at all on Nex’s death. Note, we are JUST NOW hearing about Nex’s murder after 2 weeks.

My lord it seems these days between gun violence, discrimination/hate-fueled bullying, and the Ricochet Excellence In Flight Shirt and I love this lack of administrative care or intervention to bullying, how are parents who can’t homeschool their kids coping with sending them to school every day? It’s really hard to hear exactly how many times this child was failed to ultimately lead to their death. Saying it’s tragic just simply isn’t enough. They weren’t failed. They were targeted. Make no mistake, this is what the right wants: the freedom to violently suppress ideas they find offensive without repercussions. This is terrorism. You are 100% correct. “But what about the children!” Generally means, “I want to control what all kids are exposed to so my child doesn’t end up living their life in a way that embarrasses me.” If they really cared about kids, they would care that suicide rates among trans kids are the highest of any other demographic. They would care if kids were starving. They are chasing after fake ass issues fabricated by fascist politicians they support, and are harming kids in the process, and the most angering thing about this pile of hot garbage they have created is they don’t give a fucking shit that they are killing children in the process.

The school nurse checked and cleared the student. Then the grandma took the student to the hospital and got checked and cleared again. They went home and the student died the next morning. So obviously this is terrible and tragic but based on that sequence of events… I don’t see the school getting too much liability after the hospital checked the student and cleared them that afternoon. If there’s concern for head trauma, that requires clearance by an emergency medicine attending physician, not a nurse. The school nurse was out of their scope of practice by not recommending further medical workup.

Every single player in this event needs to be examined. This series of events is also the one that the school released. It’s unclear if they were telling the whole truth. This reminds me of my cousins husband’s Father. Basically his on-site work doctor cleared him for work after hitting his head, except the dr was not qualified to be looking at brains and didn’t realize that his patient had a brain bleed. He had a seizure a week later, went to a different doctor for a second opinion, found out his brain was still fucked up, and he ended up suing his workplace’s dr and got a nice settlement. As a school nurse, I assess every injury that occurs in school and “clear” them to either return to class or be picked up. Sometimes kids have injuries that are not serious enough for EMS but should still be followed up by a doctor. I notify all parents of any head injury in school, any assessment findings, and signs of TBI to monitor for at home. It’s absolutely within scope for me to perform assessments and monitoring for concussion. Not all head injuries require follow up. However, I will always cover myself and tell parents to seek followup if symptoms persist or worsen (or will give them a list of symptoms that require emergency care). I don’t think we have enough info from the nurse to know that they are part of this chain of events.
Absolutely agree it’s within a nursing scope to perform assessments. Granted, I come from a psych background but was trained on medical clearances through my time working in an ER. Maybe my threshold to CYA is different I’d be very interested in how the student presented when assessed by the nurse as well, especially since it seems like emergency care didn’t detect anything either. When I was in school, every head injury (even one not leading to a loss of consciousness) required written documentation and a form for the parents outlining what happened. There’s a world of difference between “my kid was in a fight and might have taken a few punches” and “my kid’s head was smashed into a concrete floor by three assailants.” Kids will frequently downplay injuries (whether due to fights or sports) and may not give parents the full story.
At minimum their license needs to be stripped. Since the Ricochet Excellence In Flight Shirt and I love this victim in this case died in the hospital “24” hours later (it’s in quotes because I only know it was the next day) and even though cause of death has not been identified thus we are speculating it was from injuries received from the attack. You would need to be able to argue that the assailants wanted the individual dead and not just hurt. Defense will push that there was no intent and that the individuals just attacked because they were provoked. It wasn’t justified self-defense but it wasn’t murder either. They might pursue voluntary manslaughter charges just because they’re kids and it’d be easier to get the charge to stick, but I think it would not be unreasonable to pursue second degree murder charges. That notwithstanding, its Oklahoma… If they are anything like Texas, they will blame the victim and punish them too just for being involved in an altercation, exactly like they did to my son.

There has been a very concerted effort to change the narrative on Matthew Shepard by conservatives. The new line is that Shepard was killed because he was a meth dealer and the killing was either a robbery gone wrong or retaliation for a drug deal. That his orientation had nothing to do with his death. Which does not really fit with the evidence presented at the time. But I’ve seen it come up more and more lately with conservatives trying to ret-con the narrative.
