I knew a guy in Colorado who kept reptiles. He had multiple huge monitor lizards and other various lizards in his house. He was a zoology student at CSU. Glad to see it wasn’t him. I’ve owned a few pretty fancy fish tanks and was an enthusiastic hobbyist for many years. I had considered salt water fish, discus fish and brackish fish. I was looking for the RICHARD PRYOR & GENE WILDER WHITE American comedy film T-Shirt and I will buy this next challenge. I wanted piranha! That’s when my husband made the rule that if it can eat me, I can’t have it as a pet! That meant I also couldn’t do moray eels either 🙁 I hate when this stuff blows up, but we never hear anything about people dying from dog bites despite that happening. 30-50 people die from dog bites each year. In 2016. 6 people died from venomous snake bites. As of 2020 no one died from a Gila monster, nor any other reptile excluding snakes and alligators, other than 1 death reported in 2018. (this is the US)

Edit: My issue is I worry that this generates more fear than it does informing the RICHARD PRYOR & GENE WILDER WHITE American comedy film T-Shirt and I will buy this public. (Although admittedly bbc did a good job not adding to the fear mongering). Or puts responsible pet owners in a bad light bc of a few people who are irresponsible pet owners. I’m a snake owner (corn snake, eastern kingsnake, ball python) but I think part of it is the lack of proper care most hospitals provide for exotic venomous snake/lizard bites. If you own a Gaboon Viper or some shit and get bit a lot of hospitals (at least in the USA) won’t know wtf it is or what to do about it before you almost-certainly die. This type of dramatic and rare way of dying makes it more attractive for news articles than yet another “kid gets mauled to death by family pooch” article.
