I’ve never heard of this tradition anywhere else in Ireland. Donegal isn’t in Northern Ireland, its in the North of the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is a different country. Three totally different languages with very similar structures and grammar. Not wholly unlike Spanish, French and Italian, only closer. We can understand each other pretty well but not actually speak in any other language than our own (and English ofc). So it’s not unusual to find danes, swedes and norwegians hanging out, speaking, and communicating through their respective languages, with each other. When I was a teen and discovered Reggae and weed I thought Rasta was this chill, laid back religion. When I got older I learned it is very Old Testament based with lots of dietary laws and backwards views on women and homosexuality.

I had this exact same discovery. I remember being horrified that so many reggae musicians who preach “love”, “respect”, “togetherness” etc were actually vicious homophobes and misogynists. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. There’s some super explicitly homophobic Reggae and Jamaica music. It’s just not really packaged to be sold in other countries like it was many years ago. Because they couldn’t afford to form bands, they pieced together parts of records, from different genres and styles to repurpose the music for their own expression . Fucking brilliant. This changed my whole outlook on hip hop. Now it’s in my music rotation.
